Shape of Dreams FAQ
Short answers to the questions that come up in the first few runs, from what an Essence actually does to why the final boss keeps removing you in one hit.

1 Memories and Essences

Q. What is the difference between a Memory and an Essence?
A Memory is an ability. It occupies one of the large slots along the bottom of the screen and it is the thing you actually cast. An Essence is a modifier that plugs into a Memory in the smaller slots below and changes how that ability behaves. If it helps, think of Memories as the tools and Essences as the attachments.
Q. How many Essences fit on one Memory?
Between one and three, and you can attach or detach them freely at any time. There is no cost and no lock-in, which means experimenting mid-run is not only allowed but expected.
Q. This Essence looks useless. Should I skip it?
Try it on a different Memory first. The same Essence produces very different results depending on what it is attached to, because Memories differ in how and how often they fire. An Essence that does nothing noticeable on a slow, heavy ability can transform a rapid one.
Q. Should I leave a slot empty until I find something better?
No. Fill every slot as soon as you can. There is no mana cost to manage, so an imperfect piece in an empty slot is free value and you can always replace it later. Holding slots open is a habit carried over from games that punish over-committing, and it costs you real power here.
Q. When does an Essence actually trigger?
Most fire when the Memory they are attached to is cast. Some activate on their own without you doing anything, and a small number only trigger when you take damage. That last group is easy to misjudge, because nothing appears to happen while you are playing well.

2 Dying too easily

Q. The final boss keeps killing me in one hit. What am I doing wrong?
Use the damage you actually take as a guide. No universal health number guarantees survival on every build or difficulty.
Q. Damage upgrades feel better. Are defensive picks really worth it?
Yes, and it is not close. Health, armour, healing and barrier are all rated highly by players who clear the game regularly, and the common advice is to take the defensive option whenever it is on offer. Damage decides how fast a fight ends; defence decides whether you are alive to see it.
Q. I dodge constantly and still get hit. Why?
Because the dodge is a supplement, not the defence itself. The habit that works is continuous, irregular movement. Travelling in a straight line makes you easy to lead, and standing still to cast is where most of the damage you take actually comes from.

3 Dream Dust and Shining Wells

Q. What is Dream Dust for?
It is the currency you feed to a Shining Well to strengthen what you are carrying, and it also gates some unlocks. Yubar, for example, becomes available once you have collected 300 in total across any number of runs.
Q. What does a Shining Well do?
It upgrades Memories and Essences in exchange for Dream Dust. Each enhancement raises an Essence a step in quality. Wells appear at random positions on the map, so treat one as an opportunity to use rather than something to save Dust for.
Q. Where is Dust and gold easiest to find?
The artifact collector and the lizard souvenir shop are the reliable stops. Both tend to have several gold and Dust nodes around them, with a decent chance of a Memory or Essence at the end. If you are choosing a detour, choose one of those.

4 Progression between runs

Q. Do I lose everything when I die?
No. The build you assembled ends with the run, but The Way of Stars, character unlocks and the Dust you banked all persist. A failed run still moves the meta progression forward, which is why early losses are not wasted time.
Q. Should I grind a hard difficulty or an easy one?
An easier one, at first. Levelling characters and accumulating Dust happens faster when your runs last longer, and unlock counters do not care which difficulty you were on. Players farming meta currency deliberately drop to easy for exactly this reason. Raise the difficulty once your pool of Travelers and abilities is wide.
Q. What should I unlock first?
New Travelers and new abilities, ahead of anything incremental. Each Traveler plays differently enough to change the whole run, and a wider ability pool improves every future attempt. Percentage upgrades are worth far less at this stage than options are.
Q. Where should boss upgrade tokens go?
Into passive abilities and Essences rather than into skills. Passives and Essences apply broadly and continuously, while a skill upgrade only pays out on that one ability.

5 Difficulty and Lucid Dreams

Q. What are Lucid Dreams?
Modifiers that change the rules of a run rather than simply raising the numbers. There are nine of them, and they sit alongside the four difficulty levels as a separate way to make a run harder or stranger. They are the main source of variety once the base game stops surprising you.
Q. How much content is there?
Eight dream worlds, the original eight Travelers plus Cetus, four difficulty levels, nine Lucid Dream modifiers and more than 150 Memories and Essences to combine. The bosses are handcrafted rather than generated, so they are learnable in a way the rest of a run is not.

6 Co-op

Q. Can I play with friends?
Yes, up to four players. It is online co-op only, so there is no split screen or shared couch option. The game is designed to work solo as well, and nothing about the progression requires a group.
Q. Does the survivability advice still apply in a group?
It applies more, if anything. A downed player contributes nothing while the fight continues, and the defensive stats that keep you standing also keep the run going for everyone else. Support-leaning builds also happen to move the Aurena healing unlock along.

7 Where to go next

Q. Which Traveler should I learn on?
Lacerta is available from the start and is a straightforward ranged attacker, which suits a first run. Bismuth is the usual recommendation once unlocked, because it forgives mistakes. Both are starting points rather than ceilings, and every Traveler in the game can clear it.
Q. Are tier lists worth following?
Use them to decide what to learn on, not what to avoid. High placements largely measure how forgiving a character is. Specific pairings matter more than rankings, and a build you understand will beat a highly rated one you do not.

Cross-save, cross-play and mods

Version 1.4.1 added cross-save. The official sequence is to link devices, choose the source Profile and enable its sync, then load that synced Profile on the destination. Generate the one-use code on a console and enter it on PC; it expires after ten minutes. PC-to-PC and same-platform account linking are not supported.

Choose the source before syncing
Cross-save is not a live mirror. Load the wanted Profile or restart the client to refresh progress. Gameplay uploads occur on entering a new room. Server-granted cosmetics do not transfer. Linking a new device from PC can disconnect an existing link; follow the official multi-device instructions rather than repeatedly replacing links.

Cross-play concerns who can join a lobby, rather than which save is loaded. In 1.4.1, enabling PC mods no longer disables cross-play outright. Gameplay-affecting mods restrict creation of cross-play lobbies, while PC-to-PC play remains available. Players with different cross-play settings can also join each other when they use the same platform.

Summary

Memories are the abilities and Essences are the one to three modifiers you slot into each of them, freely and at any time, so fill every slot immediately. If the final boss is killing you in one hit, the answer is more health rather than more damage, with the right target depending on your mitigation, difficulty and modifiers. Farm unlocks and Dream Dust on lower difficulties first, because none of those counters care which tier you played.
