1 The three lock tiers
Locks come in three grades, and each one demands both a skill level and a specific tool. Turning up with the wrong combination is the most common reason a door refuses to open, and it is not always obvious which of the two you are short of.
| Lock | Skill needed | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Simple lock | Lockpicking level 1, Basic | Simple lockpick set |
| Tumbler lock | Lockpicking level 2, Advanced | Bobby pin |
| Master lock | Lockpicking level 3, Master | Bobby pin |
2 Picking, tier by tier
The tumbler lock is where most players stall, and the fix is usually to stop watching and start listening. The feedback that matters is audio, backed by vibration if you are on a controller, so treat the visual as secondary. Slow the movement down until you can hear the difference between near and correct.
The master lock is the same skill taken to an extreme. It is described by players as notoriously tricky, and the only workable approach is very small inputs with a pause between them. If you find yourself sweeping past the spot repeatedly, you are moving too far per input rather than being unlucky.
Read the in-game safe feedback
A safe minigame is part of the game, but an older reset exploit is not a reliable universal instruction. Before committing a run to it, check the on-screen controls, the installed version and whether the interface behaves as an older guide describes.
Prepare the route and tools before opening the minigame so you can focus on its feedback. The current official patch notes checked here do not confirm that holding a keyboard combination reveals each correct number. The update section below records that limitation explicitly.
4 Getting in through a window
A front door is not the only entrance, and it is often the worst one. With a glass knife you can open a window quietly, which puts you inside past whatever is watching the door. The reported input pattern for the silent breach is down, right, then down again.
The tactical value is not just avoiding a lock. Entering somewhere unexpected changes which room you start in and which patrol you meet first, and on properties where the entrance is well covered that is worth more than saving a few seconds on a pick.
5 Practising without risk
Every minute you spend fumbling a lock during a job is a minute the clock is running and someone might walk in. The lock types are consistent, so the skill transfers completely from a safe practice environment to a live one.
Check the inventory and skill requirements before a larger in-game job. Use it to confirm you are carrying both picking tools, to check your skill levels against the tier of lock you expect, and to read the safe controls before committing to a larger job. None of that is possible to do calmly once you are inside a house.
6 What to do about cameras and guards
Picking a lock leaves you stationary and occupied, which is exactly the state you do not want to be in while something is watching. Deal with observation before you deal with locks.
The crossbow is the tool that makes this order possible, since it both removes guards and disables cameras without noise. Sleeping gas through the air vents achieves something similar at building scale, and zip ties let you neutralise someone without the escalation that a fight brings.
Check game feedback instead of relying on an old exploit
Older player reports described using fast dial rotation and a reset to discover safe numbers. The current official notices checked for this update do not verify that behavior. Treat it as an unconfirmed older method, not a guaranteed solution in every version. Follow the controls and feedback shown by the in-game safe interface.
A strange inventory state may also be a version issue. Update 1.5 rebuilt saving to address items disappearing after loading into a map. That is a specific item-saving fix; it does not prove every lost tool or failed minigame has been fixed. Check the installed version and what is actually in the inventory before deciding that a lock requires a different tool.

Simple locks need Lockpicking level 1 and a simple set, while tumbler and master locks need levels 2 and 3 with a bobby pin, so carry both tools. Use the safe interface feedback; the older fast-spin/reset method is unverified for the current build. Clear the cameras and the occupants before you start any of it, because picking leaves you stationary and blind.
