1 How many copies does a group need
This is the question that decides whether Sunderfolk is expensive or cheap for your group, and the answer depends entirely on how you play.
| Way of playing | Copies required |
|---|---|
| Couch play with phones | One. Only the host needs to own the game |
| Online with mouse and keyboard | One each. Every player must own a copy |
In the phone mode, friends join for free using the Sunderfolk Controller app, which acts as their hand of cards, their guidebook and their controller at once. Joining is a matter of scanning a QR code shown on the shared screen.
2 Can I play this alone
The store lists Multi-player, Co-op and Shared or Split Screen Co-op among its features, and does not list Single-player at all. Everything in the presentation points the same way: this is designed as a group activity, described by its makers as a rediscovery of game night.
If you are shopping for something to play on your own in the evening, this is not that game, and no amount of tactical quality changes it. If you have three friends and no shared calendar for a tabletop campaign, it is aimed directly at you.
3 Is there a way to try it first
Yes, and it is unusually generous. A free trial covers the first four missions of the campaign with the full roster of heroes available, so you can test both control styles and see how the tactical encounters feel before paying.
Crucially, progress from the trial carries over seamlessly when you buy the full game. That removes the usual reason to skip a trial, which is not wanting to play the opening twice.
Given the price and the copy question above, running the trial with your actual group before deciding is the sensible order of operations.
4 What kind of game is it
Sunderfolk is a tactical co-op role playing game. Missions are fought with skill cards, and the group chooses its own turn order before acting, which turns each round into a short planning conversation rather than a sequence of individual moves.
Between battles the party returns to the village of Arden. There you upgrade shops, discover gear, share hearty meals and get to know the locals, some of whom may develop into something more than friends. It is the settlement layer that most tactical games skip.
The developer is Secret Door and the publisher is Dreamhaven. There are 14 achievements and no paid add-ons listed.
5 Languages and platforms
| Item | Support |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows only on this store |
| Full audio | English, French, Italian, German, Spanish for Spain, Polish |
| Text only | Portuguese for Brazil, Simplified Chinese |
| Remote Play | Remote Play on TV and Remote Play Together are supported |
| Cloud saves | Supported, and Family Sharing is enabled |
Japanese is not among the eight supported languages. Since the phone app carries each player card text and the guidebook, everyone at the table needs to read one of the listed languages comfortably, not only the host.
6 Will it run on my PC
| Part | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 x64 or higher | Same |
| CPU | Core i5-4590 or Ryzen 3 4100 | Core i7-11700K or Ryzen 5 5600X |
| Memory | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| Graphics | GTX 750 Ti 2 GB or RX 570 8 GB | RTX 2060 6 GB or RX 5600 XT 8 GB |
| Storage | 12 GB, DirectX 12 | 12 GB, DirectX 12 |
Only the host machine has to meet these numbers when you play with phones, which is another point in favour of that mode. A GTX 750 Ti minimum is undemanding for a 2025 release.
Sunderfolk is a tactical co-op RPG for up to four players from Secret Door and Dreamhaven, released in April 2025 at USD 49.99. Played on a couch with phones as controllers it needs only one copy, while online play with mouse and keyboard needs one per player. There is no single-player mode, a free trial covers the first four missions with progress carried over, and the eight supported languages do not include Japanese.
