World and Scripting
Grey Hack Persistent World Tips
Living with a world that keeps running, using the scripting language properly, guilds and PvP, and reading Early Access honestly.

1 The world does not pause for you

In the online mode the universe remains actively running around the clock. Changes you made to any computer stay visible to players who connect later, even when you are offline. Progress is saved, and the game states plainly that your actions may have consequences.

That flips the usual relationship between effort and risk. In a single player game, a bad decision costs a reload. Here, a careless job leaves evidence in a world that other people are reading.

Finish what you start, in one sitting
Leaving a job half done means leaving traces behind while you are not there to manage them. Scale each session to the time you actually have rather than beginning something ambitious ten minutes before bed.

2 Scripting is the real progression

The terminal commands and the exploits in the world were themselves built with the scripting language available in the game. That means you can modify any existing command, and write entirely new ones when what already exists does not satisfy your needs.

Most players never touch this, which is a shame, because it is what separates a long relationship with the game from a twenty hour one. Character power in Grey Hack is not really a stat sheet, it is the set of tools you can build.

StageA reasonable goal
FirstRead an existing command and understand what it does
SecondChange one behaviour in it and observe the difference
ThirdAutomate a repetitive step you do every session
FourthBuild something the standard toolset does not provide

The third row is where the effort starts paying for itself. Anything you do more than a handful of times per session is a candidate.

3 Reputation compounds, money does not

Commissioned missions pay in money and reputation, and the two behave differently. Money buys the next utility. Reputation shapes what the world offers you and how you are regarded in a universe shared by all players.

When a choice presents itself between a lucrative job and one that builds standing, the standing is usually the better long term purchase, exactly as it would be in any persistent online world. Money spent is gone, while a reputation continues working while you are logged off.

4 Guilds and player versus player

You can create guilds and organise attacks against other players, and the store lists PvP and online PvP among the features. This is the part of the game that most divides opinion, and it is worth deciding your own stance early.

A guild is useful even for players with no interest in attacking anyone. Shared knowledge is enormously valuable in a game with a dynamic exploit system, and a group that pools what it has learned progresses far faster than four individuals would.

If you would rather avoid other players entirely, single player mode remains available and complete. There is no penalty for choosing it beyond a quieter world.

5 Playing across three operating systems

Windows, macOS and Linux builds all exist, and cross platform multiplayer is listed as a feature, so a mixed group is genuinely supported rather than technically possible.

Combined with the 512 MB memory requirement and the 500 MB install, this is one of very few current multiplayer games that a whole friend group can run regardless of what hardware anyone happens to own. That is a real practical advantage when organising a group.

6 Reading Early Access honestly

Grey Hack has been available since December 2017 and the developer describes it as Alpha phase version 0.8, with a roadmap published on the Steam forum. Those two facts belong together in any purchase decision.

The positive reading is a game that has been developed continuously for years by a developer who is still openly asking for suggestions through the forums and Discord. The cautious reading is that a version number below 1.0 after that long means the finished shape is not settled.

The safe way to decide
Judge it on what is in the build today, since that is what you are buying. If the current game is worth the price on its own, the Early Access label is not a problem. If it only makes sense with promised features, wait.
Summary

The online world runs continuously and remembers what you did, so size each session to the time you have and finish what you start. Treat the in-game scripting language as the real progression system and automate whatever you repeat. Prefer reputation over money, use a guild for shared knowledge even if PvP does not interest you, and take advantage of builds for all three operating systems. Finally, judge an Alpha 0.8 build on what it contains today rather than on its roadmap.
