1 What is actually simulated
Nucleares puts you in the role of a nuclear power plant operator. The scope is unusually literal: over 200 parameters and 150 switches spread across the Control Room, the Containment Building, the Turbine Building and the Cooling Towers.
The reactor itself has nine fuel blocks, 72 control rods and a set of safety systems. Around it you manage coolant flow, steam generation and reactor power, and the systems are dynamic rather than scripted, so changing one thing moves the others.
| Layer | What you deal with |
|---|---|
| Reactor | Power output, fuel blocks, control rod positions |
| Thermal | Coolant flow, steam generation, energy output balance |
| Chemical | Boric acid dosing, ion exchange filtration, pH management |
| Emergencies | Equipment failures, floods and fires, handled live |
The chemical module is the part that surprises people. Water chemistry is a real and central concern in reactor operation, and very few games model it at all.
2 Is there a tutorial
Not in the usual sense, and the developer says so openly. The game does not hold your hand with step by step tutorials. Instead it expects you to learn through experimentation, research and community collaboration.
For the players it suits, the absence of guidance is the appeal. Working out an ignition sequence from documentation and then watching it succeed is a fundamentally different satisfaction from following a marker.
3 What does the AI assistant do
The Operational Assistant, referred to as AO, helps with ignition protocols, alarm systems and crisis management. It is not a substitute for understanding the plant, but it removes some of the mechanical burden of running it.
AO can be upgraded to unlock advanced functionality, which makes it a progression track of its own. There is also a free add-on called the AO Extra Power Pack that extends what it can do.
Alongside it, a remote control tablet lets you manage reactor tasks, direct AO and oversee operations from anywhere in the plant. Given how much walking a four building facility involves, that is a comfort feature with real practical value.
4 How does progression work
Daily objectives ask you to meet energy production goals, and meeting them earns Prestige and Experience Points. Levelling up unlocks more challenging scenarios, so the plant does not stay at its starting difficulty.
Prestige Points are the currency you spend, and the list of what they buy is telling: upgrades, fuel blocks, protective gear, and radioactive waste cleanup. The last item is worth noticing, because it means the consequences of poor operation persist as a bill rather than as a game over.
Underneath that sits ordinary resource management. You balance fuel consumption, maintenance costs and the demands of the surrounding community, which is what keeps the plant an economic object rather than a physics toy.
5 Languages, add-ons and requirements
Five languages are supported: English with full audio, plus Spanish for Latin America, German, Russian and Ukrainian. Japanese is not among them, which matters here because the manual is the tutorial.
| Add-on | What it adds |
|---|---|
| New Generator Set | A generator with a 50 percent longer lifespan |
| Island Fauna | Wildlife that roams, reacts to you and changes with conditions |
| AO Extra Power Pack | Free. More capability for the operational assistant |
The published developer is MicroProse Software, with the game built by Ivan Marcelo Pretti. It is Windows only and single player, with 11 achievements, and it released on 13 March 2023.
| Part | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 8, 64-bit | Windows 10 |
| CPU | Core i5 class | Core i7 class |
| Memory | 6 GB | 8 GB |
| Graphics | Intel UHD Graphics 620, DirectX 9.0 | See the note below, DirectX 11 |
Nucleares is a single player nuclear reactor simulator published by MicroProse, released March 2023 at a list price of USD 14.99. It models over 200 parameters, 150 switches, nine fuel blocks, 72 control rods and a genuine water chemistry module, and it deliberately offers no step by step tutorial. An upgradeable AI assistant and a remote tablet reduce the workload, Prestige Points fund upgrades and waste cleanup, and the modest requirements mean integrated graphics will run it.
