1 What kind of RPG is it
Monomyth is an immersive first person dungeon crawling RPG, and the developer names its lineage directly: it is inspired by the late classics of that genre. If the phrase immersive sim dungeon crawler means something to you, that is exactly what is on offer.
The defining feature is interactivity rather than scale for its own sake. The world is described as vast and highly interconnected, running from the highest towers to the lowest caverns, filled with items, puzzles, monsters and peaceful inhabitants.
2 What is the story
The sun is setting on the empires of mankind. Great storms ravage the surface of the world, civilisation is crumbling, and the people of Ariath have retreated underground.
Your father, King Ferodin the Third, sent an expedition to the fallen fortress city of Lysandria, said to hold the primeval seed, a divine gift that might calm the anger of the gods and end the thunder in the sky. Your own brother led it, and it was never heard from again.
Against the wishes of your father you go yourself, to find your brother and retrieve the gift. The warning attached is short: the ancient fortress is not as deserted as it seems.
3 How much freedom do you get
Character building is open rather than class based. You invest in six attributes and thirteen skills, which the developer says unlocks dozens of playstyles, offering a nimble assassin or a fearsome battlemage as two of many possible ends.
| System | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Combat | Swing, cast, dodge, parry and block, in free movement |
| Dialogue | A detailed keyword based system, not a menu of three replies |
| Interaction | Combine items, trade, pick locks, break doors, throw things |
| Exploration | Secret chambers, hidden passageways, many themed areas |
The keyword dialogue system is worth calling out because it is rare in modern games. You raise topics by name rather than by picking from a list, which rewards paying attention to what characters mention.
4 Languages and content warnings
This is the biggest practical caveat. Monomyth is available in English only, with full audio, and no other language is listed. In a game built on keyword based dialogue and written lore, that matters more than it would elsewhere.
Steam lists content descriptors for frequent violence or gore and for general mature content. The setting is an apocalyptic fantasy world beset by horrifying monstrosities, so that is consistent with what is described rather than a surprise.
There are 24 achievements, Windows only, single player only, and controller support is partial. A free demo has been available since 2021, which is the correct way to test both the language question and the Early Access state before buying.
5 Will it run on my PC
| Part | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10, 64-bit | Same |
| CPU | Core i5-3570K or Ryzen 5 1600 | Core i7-12700K or Ryzen 9 5900X |
| Memory | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| Graphics | GTX 760 or Radeon R9 280 | RTX 3060 or RX 6600 |
| Storage | 5 GB | 5 GB |
The gap between the two columns is unusually wide. A GTX 760 minimum next to an RTX 3060 recommendation suggests the game scales a long way, so owners of older hardware can probably run it while owners of newer hardware will see a noticeably better version of it. The 5 GB install is small in both cases.
Monomyth is an Early Access first person dungeon crawling RPG by Rat Tower, available since October 2024 at USD 19.99 with a free demo. You descend into the fortress city of Lysandria to find your brother and a divine relic, in a highly interactive underworld with keyword based dialogue, six attributes and thirteen skills. It is Windows only, single player, English only, and Steam flags it for frequent violence or gore.
