1 What is Oppidum
Oppidum is a story driven survival adventure for one to four players. Corruption has taken over the island of Insule and the creatures living there, a place once full of beauty and magic, and the weight of a prophecy says you are the one who can save it.
In practice that means building a camp, collecting resources, crafting equipment, exploring woods, swamps and caves, and uncovering the mystery behind the corruption. There are more than 40 hours of narrative content, and mission markers guide you toward the action rather than leaving you to wander.
The camp is your safe space. You craft tools, upgrade weapons, construct buildings, tend crops and animals, and cook energising meals, and you persuade the inhabitants of the island to share blueprints that improve those structures.
2 How does the co-op work
This is the most interesting part of the design, and it solves a problem most co-op survival games do not.
You become the host of a game or join an existing one, and cross-platform multiplayer is supported, so a group split across Windows, macOS and Linux can share the same island.
The practical consequence is that a group with mismatched schedules can still run one continuous campaign. A friend who joins three weeks late is dropped into the story where it currently stands rather than being told to start over.
3 Can I play it alone
Yes. The store lists single player alongside the co-operative modes, and the game is described as being for one to four players rather than for groups only.
Character customisation supports either approach, covering hairstyle, colour, cosmetics, body shape, voice, a favourite colour and face options, so a solo player still gets a character rather than a default avatar.
Note that broadband internet appears in the system requirements, so plan on being connected even when playing on your own.
4 Difficulty and accessibility
Oppidum offers four named difficulty settings and, unusually, individual parameters on top of them rather than only preset levels.
| Setting | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Relaxed | Without death |
| Smooth | Enemy damage reduced |
| As Designed | The original balance the developers intended |
| Hardcore | Bigger challenges |
The accessibility list is genuinely long. It includes an option to avoid holding buttons, adjustable quest tracker visibility, customisable resource and enemy damage multipliers, adjustable durability for tools, weapons and armour, and a simplified fishing mode.
Steam also tags the game with Camera Comfort, Color Alternatives, Custom Volume Controls, a Keyboard Only Option and Playable without Timed Input. For a survival game, that combination is well above average.
5 Languages, platforms and requirements
Seven languages are supported and Japanese is among them, alongside English with full audio, French, German, Spanish for Spain, Korean and Portuguese for Brazil. Windows, macOS and Linux builds all exist.
There are 43 achievements, Steam Cloud saves, Steam Trading Cards, full controller support with DualShock and DualSense recognised, and one paid add-on, the Original Soundtrack at USD 1.79.
| Part | Minimum | Recommended |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10, 64-bit | Same |
| CPU | Core i3-3225 or Ryzen 3 2200G | Core i7-7700K or Ryzen 5 1600 |
| Memory | 8 GB | 16 GB |
| Graphics | GTX 960 or Radeon R9 380 | GTX 1070 or RX Vega 56 |
| Target | 720p at 30 fps on Low | 1080p at 60 fps on Ultra |
The store states the performance target for each column, which is more honest than most listings and lets you predict what you will actually get. Both require broadband internet and a 6 GB install.
Oppidum is a story driven survival adventure for one to four players from EP Games, released April 2025 at USD 8.99 with over 40 hours of content and 43 achievements. Its standout feature is co-op that does not require everyone online at once, with cross-play across Windows, macOS and Linux and joining at any point in the story. It supports seven languages including Japanese, offers four difficulty presets plus individual parameters, and carries an unusually complete accessibility list.
