1 What this release is
This is the tactical role playing game first released in 1997, returned by Square Enix with fully voiced dialogue, enhanced graphics and a long list of gameplay improvements. The store frames it as the genre defining tactical RPG making its long awaited return.
The story is set in Ivalice, a kingdom that lost the Fifty Years War and then lost its king, leaving a two year old heir and two rival dukes circling the regency. The war that follows is remembered as the War of the Lions, and you follow Ramza of House Beoulve and his commoner childhood friend Delita through it.
It is worth saying plainly that this is a serious political story told through battles rather than a light fantasy adventure, and it is a large part of why the original is still discussed decades later.
2 Enhanced or Classic
One purchase contains two versions of the game, and choosing between them is the first thing the title asks of you.
| Version | What it offers |
|---|---|
| Enhanced | Improved graphics, a completely rebuilt interface, a revised and expanded script delivered with full voice acting, and modern conveniences |
| Classic | Original 1997 visuals and gameplay with the War of the Lions translation and conveniences including autosave |
For a first playthrough the Enhanced version is the better choice. Classic preserves the older presentation and gameplay, but it also has autosave; it is not simply a graphics filter or an unchanged original build.
3 Price, release and languages
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Released | 30 September 2025 |
| List price | USD 49.99 for the standard edition. Confirm on the store page |
| Developer and publisher | Square Enix |
| Platform | Windows. No macOS or Linux build is listed |
| Achievements | 50, plus Steam Trading Cards |
| Languages | Seven interface languages. Full voice in English and Japanese; Korean is text support |
A Deluxe Edition adds in game equipment and cosmetic colour options for Ramza, and a bundle pairs the game with the complete soundtrack. Neither is required. The store is explicit that the bundle does not upgrade a standard copy to Deluxe, which is the kind of detail worth reading before clicking.
4 Is there any multiplayer
No. Steam lists single-player only and does not advertise competitive or cooperative modes for this release.
Steam Cloud is supported. Confirm that synchronization has completed before switching machines, especially when keeping several manual saves.
5 Difficulty and safety features
The original had a reputation for sharp difficulty spikes, and the Enhanced version addresses that directly. Selectable difficulty levels are included, with a gentler setting aimed at players new to the genre, and adjustable difficulty is listed on the store page as a feature.
Two battlefield conveniences are new rather than borrowed. A tactical view makes it easier to survey the terrain and plan before committing, and a battle speed control lets you move through easy fights quickly. Autosave and the ability to retreat from a battle reduce the cost of a mistake.
Save anytime and playable without timed input are listed. Turn order and charged actions still matter inside a battle, even though combat does not require timed attack-button presses.
6 Controllers, keyboard and Remote Play
Full controller support is listed and a gamepad is recommended. Remote Play on phone and on tablet are both supported, which suits a turn based game with no reaction requirements unusually well.
As noted above, the Classic version narrows this: XInput controllers and keyboard only, with no mouse support. Plan around that if you intend to spend serious time in Classic.
7 System requirements
The requirements are modest by current standards. The listed minimum targets 1280x720 with a Ryzen 3 2300X or Core i3-8100, 8 GB of memory, a Radeon RX 460, Intel Arc A380 or GeForce GTX 750 Ti, DirectX 12 and 15 GB of storage.
The recommended tier targets 1920x1080 and is nearly identical, moving only to a Radeon RX 470 on the graphics line. Square Enix also states that integrated graphics are outside the supported configuration and that Windows 10 is not covered by the compatibility guarantee, while noting the machines were tested at equivalent specifications.
8 Never played a tactics game
This is a reasonable place to start, with one caveat. The systems are deep, and the game explains them less thoroughly than a modern tactics game would, because it was designed in an era when players expected to experiment.
The gentler difficulty setting removes most of the pain from that. What remains is a game about positioning, turn order and building your own units through a job system, and the beginner guide on this site covers those in the order you meet them.
Current patch and language support
Enhanced version 1.5.0 added Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean text. This is text support: the current Steam language table marks full audio only for English and Japanese. Change Enhanced text through General Settings, Language, then Text Language (Enhanced).
If clicking a lower equipment or ability row selects the first entry, check the installed patch. The 17 July mouse issue notice was followed by the 23 July 1.5.2 fix, which also corrects the details window failing to follow the cursor. The old investigation notice does not describe an issue still awaiting that fix.
Find the version number on the version-selection screen or Enhanced title screen. Sources: 1.5.0 language update and 1.5.2 mouse fix. Checked 26 October 2026.
One purchase contains both an Enhanced version with new visuals, a rebuilt interface, full voice acting and modern conveniences, and a Classic version that preserves the original presentation and rules. Start with Enhanced, particularly if you use a mouse, since Classic does not support one. It is single player only, priced at USD 49.99, carries 50 achievements, runs on modest hardware, and now includes selectable difficulty, autosave, retreat, a tactical view and a battle speed control.
