GONE Fishing FAQ
A co-op horror game for one to eight players where the fishing is the survival mechanic, not a break from it.

1 What is the actual loop

An ancient lake monster is hungry, and the only thing that delays it is a full offering of fish before darkness falls. Days are for gathering bait and fishing. Nights are for finding out whether you gathered enough.

There is no hiding option
The store is blunt about it: the cabin will not keep you safe, and running will not either. Only a full offering can delay the inevitable, which makes fishing the survival mechanic rather than the pleasant part between scares.

Failure is also cumulative rather than instant. The creature is described as growing more aggressive with each failed offering, so a bad day makes the next night worse.

2 How many players

One to eight. The category list includes single player, multiplayer, co-op and online co-op, so the full range is supported rather than being a nominal solo mode attached to a party game.

Eight is a large number for a horror game, and it changes what the experience is. A group that size can cover the shoreline and clear an offering comfortably, which trades tension for chaos.

3 Can it be played alone

Yes, and the description of co-op tells you what changes when you do. Players are meant to coordinate to gather, fish and survive, or risk being dragged into the lake one by one.

Group sizeWhat it feels like
AloneEvery task is yours. Bait, fishing and offering compete for the same daylight
Two to fourRoles divide naturally, and the threat of being picked off one by one still holds
Five to eightOfferings become easy. The game becomes a social one rather than a tense one

4 It is in Early Access

Early Access sits in the genre list beside Action, Adventure and Indie. The store also points players to a Discord for suggesting ideas and reporting bugs, which is consistent with a build still being shaped.

Judge it on the current loop. Bait gathering, the fishing minigame, the altar, the merchant and the leaderboard all exist now.

5 The controls, in the developer words

Unusually for a store page, the developer explains the fishing inputs directly. They are worth reproducing because they define the skill of the game.

StepInput and consequence
Equip baitOpen the inventory with TAB, or whichever key you have bound
CastHold the left mouse button
Set the hookClick at the right moment on the bite. Poor timing makes the fish harder to reel
ReelHold to reel. Too much tension snaps the line, too little lets the fish escape
OfferDrop the fish at the altar with G, or into the trader basket for money

Note that the hook timing carries forward into the reeling. A missed hook does not simply fail, it makes the rest of that fight harder, which is why the timing matters more than the tension management.

6 The balloon merchant

A mysterious trader arrives by hot air balloon at midday, selling upgrades and totems that the store says may be the difference between survival and doom.

This creates the central tension of the game. Every fish can go to the altar to appease the monster tonight, or into the balloon basket for money to buy something that helps every night after. There is no way to do both with the same fish.

7 Leaderboards and achievements

Every fish you catch is recorded, and there is a global leaderboard for the biggest catch. That is a second reason to fish beyond survival, and it is the part of the game that rewards patience rather than efficiency.

Steam Achievements are supported, with 44 in the list.

Since the fishing is explained in mouse buttons and a keyboard inventory key, keyboard and mouse is the input the game was designed around.

9 How frightening is it

There are no content descriptors on the store listing and the required age field is zero. The horror is atmospheric by design: peaceful days turning into tense nights, with the threat escalating rather than appearing constantly.

Absence of a descriptor is not a rating, so treat it as a starting point rather than a guarantee, particularly if you are considering it for a younger player.

Summary

A one to eight player co-op horror game where fishing is how you survive. Gather bait by day, catch fish with a hook and tension minigame, and offer them at the altar before nightfall, because neither the cabin nor running will save you. A balloon merchant arrives at midday selling upgrades and totems, so every fish is a choice between tonight and every night after. Early Access, list price USD 9.99, 44 achievements, fourteen languages with English audio, and a global leaderboard that records every catch.
