Once the daily routine is under control, Retro Rewind becomes a series of business decisions. When to charge, who to hire, where the extra money comes from and what to spend it on. The figures below come from player guides unless the store page or the achievement list is named as the source, and games like this are often rebalanced, so treat numbers as a guide rather than a rule.
1 When to waive a late fee
The store page says customers react differently when they are charged for late or broken returns. Guides put the late fee at USD 2 and describe it as optional: most customers pay without complaint, but some take it badly and threaten never to come back.
2 Always charge for damage
The damage fee is a different kind of decision. Guides report it at USD 20 and recommend never waiving it, because that amount is what it costs to buy a replacement copy. Waiving a late fee gives up a small profit. Waiving a damage fee means paying to restock a tape out of your own pocket.
| Fee | If you waive it | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Late, USD 2 | You lose a little profit | Case by case |
| Damage, USD 20 | You pay for the replacement | Charge it |
3 Hiring: what to look for
The first staff slot opens at store level 6 according to guides, and the second at level 20. Each employee costs a flat fee per day, so a hire has to earn back that fee in time saved. Applicants change from day to day, which means there is no need to accept the first person available.
4 Letting someone go
Guides list the situations where firing is worth it: serious slacking, frequent sickness and sleeping on the job. The detail that catches people out is timing. If you fire someone and hire a replacement on the same day, guides report that you pay both of them for that day.
5 Weekdays, weekends and rain
The store page confirms that weather, seasons and holidays shape demand, and names rainy Friday nights as extremely busy. One player guide puts numbers on the difference: roughly USD 250 to 300 on an ordinary weekday, and USD 500 or more on Fridays and weekends. That is a single source and depends on how far your store has grown, but the shape is consistent with the store page.
6 Side income: snacks and the arcade
Rentals are the business, but they are not the only income. Snacks unlock at store level 4 according to guides, and cost very little compared with their selling price. The achievement list confirms slushy drinks, popcorn and cotton candy, plus an arcade machine you can buy.
One guide estimates that arcade and candy machines bring in around USD 100 a day. Treat that as a rough figure, but the reasoning holds: a machine earns on its own while you are busy elsewhere, which is exactly what a one person counter needs.
7 The Tape Dealer and the black market
The store page describes a shady Tape Dealer selling exclusive bootleg films. Guides place him in the alley behind the store on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with stock you cannot get through normal ordering.
There is a second black market route. The Off The Books achievement asks you to order a movie with its SKU code on the black market, and the store page notes that every movie has a unique code you can share with friends. Holographic movies are another special category, with an achievement for displaying four of them in a display case.
8 Expanding the store
The store layout can be expanded in stages, and the Big Store Energy achievement asks you to unlock every expansion. Walls and floors can be customised and decorated with posters and memorabilia. Guides add two practical points: decoration mode is free to enter, and old shelves can be sold when you replace them during a rebuild, which softens the cost of reorganising.
Expand when the shelves you have are full and correctly sorted, not before. A larger floor with half empty shelves makes customers walk further for the same selection.
9 All 18 achievements
Taken from the official Steam achievement list. None depend on a rare event. They follow naturally from running and growing the store.

Waive the USD 2 late fee for customers worth keeping, but always charge the USD 20 damage fee because it pays for the replacement. Hire for return and register speed plus customer service and good health, avoid firing and rehiring on the same day, and do not rush staff constantly. Prepare for Fridays, weekends and rain, use slow days for setup, and add snacks and an arcade machine for income that runs on its own. Visit the Tape Dealer on his days, try the black market SKU codes, and expand only once your existing shelves are full and sorted.
