1 Keep the door closed. Always
The developers state this as a rule rather than as advice, and they list three separate consequences of failing it: the impostor can escape, the order of your eliminations can be altered, and you may be prevented from making it through the night at all.
Build the habit before you build any others. In co-op, assign it to one named player, because a rule everyone owns is a rule nobody checks.
2 A doll out of its box proves nothing
This is the single most important thing to understand, and the developers say it directly. You might assume everything is settled when you find one doll outside its box. It may not have moved on its own.
Another doll may have moved it. Worse, another doll may have moved many others while remaining completely still itself. A perfectly stationary doll is therefore not innocent, and a displaced one is not guilty.
The practical rule that follows: treat position as a clue about the scene, never as a verdict about the doll. Anyone who convicts on a single displacement will be wrong often enough to lose.
3 Learn the dolls, not the impostor
Each doll has its own objectives, preferences, friendships, enmities, loves and hatreds. That is a lot of personality, and it is the actual game content.
You cannot identify an impostor by looking for suspicious behaviour, because you have no baseline. You find it by knowing what each real doll would do, and noticing the one that did something else. The developers make this explicit by warning that the dolls are capable of confusing you especially if you do not know each doll well.
On a first night, then, learning who likes whom is not a distraction from the puzzle. It is the puzzle.
4 Eliminate in a defensible order
The stated method is to discard candidates until the impostor is left. Because eliminations happen in an order that can be disrupted, the order you choose is itself a decision.
Clear the dolls you are most confident about first. A chain of eliminations built on your strongest evidence survives a disruption better than one that started with a guess, because you can still trust the early links.
Note also that dolls can annihilate other dolls. A candidate removing itself from your list is not the same as you clearing it, and the difference matters when you reconstruct what happened.
5 How to spend a night
With 209 achievements and repeated nights, a lost night is cheap. A night where you learned three dolls properly is progress even if the impostor got away.
Keep the door closed, because an open one does not merely risk the night, it can alter your elimination order and invalidate deductions you already made. A doll found out of its box may have been moved by another, and a doll that never moved may have moved everything else, so position is a clue and never a verdict. Learn what each real doll would do before hunting the one that did something else, and eliminate your most confident candidates first.
