1 Lay the camp out by walking distance

In a game where every task consumes time, the layout of your camp is a permanent tax or a permanent saving. Most players arrange a camp by how it looks and then walk the same twenty metres a thousand times.

A better principle is to place things by how often they are used together. Fire, water container and cooking belong within a few steps of each other, because boiling and cooking are the tasks you repeat every single day.

Storage sits next. Material processing can be further out, because it happens in batches rather than constantly.

2 Free form building is for terrain, not looks

Walls, floors and roofs are not locked to a grid. That is usually sold as creative freedom, and it is, but the practical benefit is different.

Build to the ground you have
Grid based building forces you to find flat ground or flatten it. Free placement lets you put a shelter against a slope, into a hollow, or under an overhang without fighting the engine. In a procedurally generated world, that is worth far more than a tidy rectangle.

Since a procedural world will rarely hand you an ideal site, the ability to accept an imperfect one is the real advantage. Look for shelter the terrain already partly provides.

3 Terraforming is a survival tool

Dynamic terraforming is listed alongside the shelter system, which means the ground is something you can change rather than only something you stand on.

Used well, that answers problems building alone cannot. A raised approach, a cut bank, or a levelled shelf changes how animals and weather reach you, and it costs materials you were going to move anyway.

Used badly, it is an enormous time sink. Terraforming is worth doing once, deliberately, when you commit to a site, rather than repeatedly while you are still deciding where to live.

4 Dividing labour in co-op

Online co-op with cross-platform play means a group can span Windows, Mac and Linux. The interesting part is what a second person does with a clock based economy.

RoleWhy it is worth a whole person
Camp keeperBoiling, cooking and processing never stop, and they are all time bound
ForagerLong trips are safe only if someone else keeps supplies flowing
BuilderFree form construction and terraforming reward uninterrupted attention

The mistake groups make is all going out together, which doubles the gathering and leaves the production chain idle. In a game where tasks cost hours, someone staying home is not wasted labour.

5 Building in an unfinished game

This is in Early Access, with story continuation, NPC cooperation and trade, and animal taming all listed as upcoming. That is worth factoring into how much you invest in one base.

Features that are coming tend to change what a good camp looks like. NPC trade rewards being near routes and neighbours; animal taming rewards space and enclosures. Neither of those is a reason to wait, but both are reasons to keep a first base practical rather than monumental.

Build what makes this week efficient. There will be a better site later, and you will know more about what to want from it.

Summary

Lay out a camp by how often things are used together, since every task costs time and a bad layout taxes every day. Free form building matters most because it lets you accept imperfect terrain in a generated world rather than hunting for flat ground. Terraform once when you commit to a site, not while you are still deciding. In co-op, keep someone at camp: an idle production chain wastes more than a second forager gains.
