1 Energy is one pool for two jobs
The developers state it directly: dodging and using weapons both consume energy, and you must avoid running out in the middle of a fight.
That single sentence defines the combat. Every attack you make is a dodge you cannot make later. Offence and defence are drawn from the same account, so aggression is not free the way it is in games with separate stamina and ammunition.
Players coming from action games where dodging is unlimited will die repeatedly until this clicks. The fix is not better reflexes but budgeting.
2 Never enter a fight already spent
Two habits prevent it. Keep a reserve you refuse to spend on attacks, so there is always one dodge left. And do not start an optional encounter while recovering from the previous one, because in a crater full of armored units there is always another fight available later.
3 Area bosses are the map key
Exploration is described plainly: aim to defeat the area boss and discover new unexplored areas. That makes the structure legible from the first hour.
If you are wondering what to do next, the answer is always the current area boss. There is no hidden progression path to search for, which means time spent wandering an already cleared area is time not spent progressing.
Events may also trigger while you explore, so an area is not necessarily finished the moment you have seen its layout. The boss is the gate; the events are the reason to look around on the way to it.
4 Pick up more than you think you need
The premise is scavenging: you must search the land for resources if you wish to survive, and you make use of the parts and items you find. Hod is explicitly full of broken machines and ruined buildings.
Because parts are selected to suit the situation rather than ranked from worst to best, a part that seems useless now is a part you will want when the situation changes. Discarding by apparent quality is how players end up unable to answer a specific fight.
5 A first session in order
If the boss stops you, the answer is usually parts rather than practice. Rebuilding for that specific fight is the intended response, and it is what the customisation system exists for.
Dodging and attacking draw on the same energy pool, so every attack is a dodge you cannot make later. Keep a reserve you refuse to spend, because an empty bar leaves you unable to hit or escape. Area bosses are the only thing that opens new regions, so they are always the answer to what to do next. Collect parts you cannot currently use, since parts are chosen to suit a situation rather than ranked by quality.
