1 It is in Early Access
Early Access appears in the genre list alongside Action and Indie, and that belongs at the top of any honest description rather than buried in a features list.
2 What is Mycopunk
A squad of robot rejects is hired by the SAXON corporation and sent to a planet suffering a fungal catastrophe. You are the New Atlas Hazard Crew, exterminators dropping into dangerous missions to drive back a mycological menace and work out whether it is really the natural disaster the company claims.
Mechanically it is a mission based co-op shooter: you deploy, fight hordes that corrupt and weaponise the planet technology against you, collect mods, and return to a hub to fit them.
The tone is comic. Pigeons at Play, published by Devolver Digital, describe an outrageous arsenal that includes some power tools, and note you can put a deflector shield on a chainsaw or turn yourself into a bomb.
3 Can you play it solo
Yes. Single player is listed alongside multi-player, co-op and online co-op, so a solo run is supported rather than tolerated.
A broadband connection appears in both requirement tiers, though, so treat online availability as expected even when playing alone. The design clearly centres on a crew, and much of the humour is written for people to react to together.
4 The grid based upgrade system
This is the feature the developer leads with, and it is what separates Mycopunk from other co-op shooters. Weapons are supercharged in a one of a kind grid based upgrade system, and every mission grants new mods to jam into your upgrade grids.
| Rule | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Mods occupy space on a grid | Fitting is a puzzle, not a checklist. Shape matters as much as effect |
| Whatever fits is fair game | The developer states this outright, so absurd combinations are intended |
| Mods drop every mission | Your build changes constantly rather than being chosen once |
The store frames the outcome in both directions: finely tuned death machines, or horrible mistakes of engineering, up to you.
5 The dropship between missions
Between deployments you let off steam in an orbital dropship packed with toys and games, hang out with friends, learn more about the galaxy, and talk to the insectoid SAXON veteran Roachard Cox.
A hub with things to play with rather than only menus is a deliberate social space. In a co-op game it is where a group decides what to do next, and it is also where most of the writing lives.

| You have friends and enjoy building silly, powerful combinations | You want a finished, balanced product today |
