Sunlight is the whole game. How lanes, economy and your limited seed slots actually decide a level.

1 Sunlight is the real resource

Every plant costs sunlight, and sunlight arrives at a rate you control by how many producers you have planted. That makes this a game about compound interest rather than about reflexes.

A player who spends everything on defence in the first thirty seconds has capped their income for the whole level. They will hold the early waves comfortably and then be unable to answer the later ones.

Collecting sunlight promptly matters too. Anything left lying on the lawn is income you have not received yet.

2 Build economy before defence

The opening of almost every level is quiet on purpose. That window exists so you can plant producers, and the game is balanced around you using it.

PhaseWhat to spend on
First waveProducers, and only the minimum defence needed to survive
MiddleFilling out attackers lane by lane, starting where pressure is highest
Late wavesDefensive plants and emergency options, since income no longer has time to pay back

The rule of thumb is that a producer planted early pays for itself several times over, while one planted at the end never does.

3 Lanes are separate battles

Zombies walk in straight lines toward your house, and most plants only affect their own row. That means the lawn is five small games happening beside each other rather than one big one.

Judge each lane on its own. A row with three attackers and no threats is wasting resources that another row needs, and the correct response to pressure is usually to reinforce that specific lane rather than to strengthen everything.

4 The lawn mower is one free mistake

Each lane has a mower at the end that clears it once. It is not a safety net you should be relying on, it is a single use resource.

A spent mower changes the level
Once a lane has used its mower, the next zombie that reaches the end of that row ends the level. Treat a triggered mower as a warning to reinforce that lane immediately, not as a problem that solved itself.

5 Your seed slots are the difficulty setting

Before each level you choose which plants you may use, from a list that grows as you progress. The number of slots is limited, so the selection screen is where most levels are won or lost.

Choose after looking at what the level will throw at you rather than picking favourites. A perfect loadout for one stage can be useless in the next, and swapping one slot is usually the difference between a level that feels impossible and one that feels easy.

6 Cheap plants that buy time

Not every slot needs to deal damage. Plants that simply absorb hits are frequently the most valuable thing on the lawn, because they convert sunlight into time and time into more sunlight.

Placed in front of your attackers, a blocker turns a lane that was losing into one that is holding. The instinct to answer pressure with more damage is usually wrong; answering it with delay is usually right.

7 Reading a new zombie

The campaign introduces enemies one at a time, and each new one exists to break a habit you just formed. Some ignore your front line, some bring protection, some arrive somewhere you were not watching.

When a new type appears, the question is not how much damage it takes but which of your assumptions it breaks. Answer that and the counter is usually obvious from the plants you already have.

8 A reliable opening

  1. Plant producers in the back columns during the quiet opening, as many as you can afford.
  2. Add one attacker to the lane that gets pressure first, and nothing else yet.
  3. Collect every piece of sunlight promptly. Income delayed is income lost.
  4. Expand attackers lane by lane once your producers are in place.
  5. Put blockers in front of attackers before the heavy waves rather than during them.
  6. Keep an emergency option in a slot for the wave that gets through anyway.
Summary

Sunlight compounds, so spend the quiet opening on producers and collect every piece promptly. Treat the five lanes as separate battles and reinforce the one under pressure rather than everything. A lawn mower is one free mistake per lane and a spent one is a warning. Your seed selection is the real difficulty setting, so choose for the level rather than by preference, and remember that plants which buy time are often worth more than plants which deal damage.
