Speaking clearly while something is chasing you, and how to actually hit a vandalism target.

1 Set up your microphone first

In most games audio setup is optional. Here your voice is the input device for the main mechanic, so a badly configured microphone is equivalent to a broken controller.

Test before the first session rather than during it. A microphone too far away, a noisy room or aggressive noise suppression will all interfere with a system that is listening for specific words.

2 Speak slowly, especially when panicking

The store is explicit that enunciation matters and that you should keep your voice steady no matter how dire the circumstances. That is a warning as much as a feature description.

The failure everyone experiences is the same: something appears, you shout the escape spell too fast, nothing happens, and you shout it faster. Slowing down when frightened is genuinely the core skill of this game, and it is harder than it sounds.

3 Learn three spells properly

The listed effects are push, pull, smash, launch, float, teleport, clone, confuse, disguise and fishify, and the store notes the magic is well beyond your understanding. Trying to hold all of them in your head while being chased does not work.

RolePick something that
DestructionBreaks things quickly, since that is how points arrive
EscapeMoves you or the creature. This is the one to practise saying calmly
TrickeryConfuses, disguises or clones, for buying the crew time

Three reliable spells you can pronounce under pressure beat ten you half remember.

4 Vandalism is the score, not the joke

Every inconvenience you create adds points toward the target for the night. That means the silly actions are the objective rather than decoration around one.

Practically, a room you pass through without breaking anything is a room wasted. Get into the habit of doing damage continuously rather than searching for a special thing to destroy, because the target is a total rather than a checklist.

5 Noise attracts what is in the halls

The first piece of survival advice the developer gives is to stay quiet. In a game where you break things for points and cast spells by speaking, that creates an obvious and deliberate tension.

Scoring and hiding are opposites
You cannot be both silent and productive. The skill is choosing when to make noise, which usually means destroying a lot in one burst and then moving somewhere else entirely.

6 Four responses to a creature

The store lists them in order, and that order is the advice: stay quiet, cause distractions, hide, and finally when all else fails, run.

Notice what is absent. Fighting is not on the list. The creatures include things built to protect the study, results of magical experiments, and things unknown even to the archmage, and none of the spells listed are weapons.

7 Playing as a crew

With up to six minions the natural structure is pairs. One person makes noise and breaks things, the other watches the corridor and calls the warning.

The trickery spells make more sense in that light. Confusing or distracting a creature is a service you perform for a teammate who is mid vandalism, and it is worth more than adding your own damage to a room that is already being wrecked.

8 Your first night

  1. Test the microphone and set your volume before joining anyone.
  2. Practise saying your escape spell calmly while nothing is happening.
  3. Break something in every room you enter rather than looking for a target.
  4. Work in pairs so somebody is always watching the corridor.
  5. When a creature appears, run through the four responses in order rather than improvising.
  6. Expect to fail a spell because you shouted it. Everyone does.
Summary

Your voice is the input device, so configure the microphone before playing and practise saying your escape spell calmly. Learn three spells well rather than ten badly: one for destruction, one for escape, one for trickery. Points come from continuous damage, so break something in every room, but remember that noise attracts the things patrolling the halls. Nothing on the spell list is a weapon, so follow the developer order of quiet, distract, hide, run.
