1 Choose the difficulty honestly
The store describes two ends of the range: a laid back setting for the narrative and the joy of exploration, and a cranked up one for intense, skill focused combat.
2 Use a gamepad
The store lists full controller support and separately marks gamepad as recommended, with DualShock and DualSense both named. That second flag is the developer telling you which input they tuned against.
For a game where a parry has to land at a critical moment, using the input the timing was designed around removes an entire category of frustration.
3 Movement is the first skill
Kotama has what the store calls a fluid constitution, used to weave through hordes of enemies at blistering speed. Deadly traps are listed as a separate obstacle from enemies, and the special abilities are described as the way to overcome them.
| Priority | Reason |
|---|---|
| Learn the movement ability first | It is both the traversal tool and the defensive one |
| Practise it on traps, not enemies | Traps repeat identically, so they are a free training ground |
| Then take it into crowds | Weaving through a group is the intended way to fight, not a trick |
4 Learning the parry properly
The boss sequence is spelled out on the store page, and it is a chain rather than a single skill. Each link needs to work before the next one matters.
| Step | What has to happen |
|---|---|
| Read the pattern | Each guardian has unique attacks and mechanics. Survive one cycle before trying to win |
| Parry the lethal strike | Timed at the critical moment. This neutralises the attack rather than reducing it |
| Break their stance | The reward for parrying, and the thing that creates the opening |
| Punish in bullet time | A fleeting window for a decisive blow. Commit fully here rather than poking |
Spend your first attempt at any boss learning step one only. Trying to parry an attack you have not seen twice is guessing, and guessing against something that can destroy you in a heartbeat does not work.
5 Weapons, skills and Memocards
Weapons can be switched seamlessly and combined with skills and Memocards to chain combos. Because switching happens during combat rather than before it, your loadout is a set of tools rather than a single choice.
Energy builds toward a Fluid Detonation that wipes the field, so anything that keeps you attacking safely is worth more than raw damage. Generating that meter is a real objective in every fight.
6 How to explore without a map obsession
The Citadel is a labyrinth with illusory walls, locked gates and shortcuts that only open once you have the right ability. That structure rewards a specific habit.
When you find something you cannot pass, note what kind of obstacle it was rather than exactly where it was. New abilities in this genre are answers to categories of obstacle, so the moment you gain one you will know which places to revisit.
7 Talk to the other students
Peculiar students are scattered across the Academy, and aiding them uncovers their stories and earns their loyalty. The store states that a small choice may end up saving the Academy and deciding your fate.
Treat every student encounter as main content. In a game that says its side interactions decide the ending, walking past them is a decision even when it does not feel like one.
Choose the difficulty that matches why you bought the game, and use a gamepad since the store recommends one and the parry timing was tuned for it. Learn the movement ability against traps before taking it into crowds. Approach bosses as a four step chain and spend the first attempt only reading the pattern. Carry varied weapons early and a chaining Memocard set later, keeping the energy meter in mind since Fluid Detonation clears the field. Note the kind of obstacle you cannot pass rather than its exact location, and treat the student side stories as main content.
