MyVoiceZoo Recording and Zoo Tips
Keeping a growing zoo pleasant to listen to, recording with other people, and getting value from a three dollar idle game.

1 Design the soundscape, not the sounds

A single recording judged on its own is a joke. Twenty recordings playing across a growing zoo are an environment, and those are different problems.

Vary the pitch deliberately
If every animal is recorded in your normal speaking range, the zoo becomes a wall of the same tone. Give some animals high sounds and others low ones, and the mixture stays listenable as it grows.

The same applies to rhythm. A mixture of short bursts and slower sounds reads as a place with things happening in it, while twenty identical lengths reads as a machine.

2 Record other people

Nothing in the design limits the recordings to one person, and a zoo containing several voices is more interesting than one containing only yours.

This is the best thing to do with the game if you have children in the house. It requires no reading, no controls beyond recording, and produces something they made rather than something they watched.

Ask before recording anyone, keep it to animal noises, and let each person hear their own animal afterwards. That last part is most of the fun.

3 Volume is your main tool

Custom volume controls appear in the feature list, which means separate channels rather than one slider. In a game whose entire audio output is recordings of people making noise, that matters more than usual.

SituationWhat to adjust
Running it beside workDrop the animal channel and leave the music, or the reverse if the music distracts
One recording is too loudRe record it quietly rather than turning everything else up
Showing it to someoneTurn the animals up. The reveal is the point of the game

4 Ideas beyond animal impressions

The system records a sound and plays it back as a cry. It does not check whether the sound resembles an animal, which opens some room for invention.

Words instead of noises
A single short word, said flatly, becomes surprisingly funny when a creature says it every few seconds.
Hummed notes
Give several animals different hummed pitches and the zoo starts producing accidental chords as it fills up.

Keep whatever you record something you would be comfortable hearing repeatedly and, if the save ever moves between machines, something you would be comfortable having stored.

5 Using it as a background game

The developer says it can be enjoyed naturally by leaving it idle, without complicated controls and without pressure to optimise. That describes a specific use rather than a limitation.

The requirements are modest, at a Core i3 with two gigabytes of memory and Intel integrated graphics, so it can sit in a window on a laptop without competing for resources with whatever else you are doing.

6 Saving and moving between machines

Two relevant features are listed: save anytime, and Steam Cloud. The first means you can stop whenever you like without losing the zoo.

The second is less clear cut. Cloud support means saves can follow you between machines, but the store does not say whether the recorded audio itself travels with them. If you move to another computer and find silent animals, re recording them is the straightforward fix rather than a sign that something is broken.

7 Mistakes worth avoiding

MistakeBetter approach
Shouting into the microphoneSpeak at normal volume. Distortion is permanent until you re record
Long, elaborate recordingsShort sounds survive repetition. Long ones do not
Every animal in the same voiceVary pitch and length so the zoo has texture
Hoarding incomeAdopt as soon as you can. Earlier animals earn for longer
Recording anything personalKeep it to noises. The store does not say where the audio is stored
Summary

Think about the whole soundscape rather than individual impressions: vary pitch and length so a growing zoo stays listenable. Record other people, especially children, since the game needs no reading and produces something they made. Use the separate volume channels to fit it beside other work, and re record anything too loud rather than raising everything else. Spend income early because earlier animals earn for longer, keep every recording short and non personal, and if a zoo arrives silent on another machine, simply record it again.
