Voidling Bound has more interlocking systems than its short species list suggests. Early on it is easy to spread resources thinly across every creature and end up with none strong enough for harder planets. This guide explains how the systems fit together. It uses the store page, the official achievement list and reviews from Steam Deck HQ and I Dream of Indie, which are named where a detail comes from only one of them.
1 Collect eggs everywhere
New Voidlings come from eggs rescued from infested locations, and the store notes that lucky hatches can carry rare natures. I Dream of Indie reports that levels hide eggs, with two golden eggs per level that count toward your star total, and more eggs awarded when a mission ends. Exploring for eggs is therefore both your source of creatures and part of your score.
2 Pick the Voidling for the job
The store advises crafting and picking the right Voidling for each challenge, and Steam Deck HQ notes that enemy types have elemental weaknesses. Reviews describe how differently the species play.
Those descriptions come from I Dream of Indie. Try every species you hatch in at least one mission before deciding who to invest in, because a creature that feels awkward at first may suit a playstyle you had not tried.
3 Evolution and elements
Evolution uses mutagens gathered in missions and branches into different elemental variants. The store says evolution customises elemental alignment, appearance, playstyle and abilities. Reviewers name several elements between them, including fire, organic, radiation and frost, and Steam Deck HQ gives an example: Kwipeck can become Fire or Organic, and the Fire path offers quick attacks or explosive bullets while the Organic path leans toward sniping or debuffs.
4 Attributes
Levelling up gives attribute points to assign. The store names the five attributes, and the right spread depends on how the creature fights.
| Attribute | Consider it for |
|---|---|
| Strength | Creatures that win by raw hitting power |
| Vitality | Close range fighters that take hits |
| Essence | Builds leaning on abilities |
| Recuperation | Sustaining through long fights |
| Agility | Mobile creatures that dodge rather than tank |
Steam Deck HQ criticises the balance for favouring agile and strong Voidlings. That is worth knowing, but pick attributes for the creature you enjoy; the gap matters most in the hardest Abyss levels.
5 Research and upgrades
Research points from missions unlock deeper ability upgrades. I Dream of Indie explains that research upgrades a species skill tree across the whole bloodline, so progress is not lost when you breed a new generation. The achievements track upgrades at 10, 100 and 250, and I Dream of Indie also mentions ship facilities such as health stims and a gym bought with currency.
6 Breeding, genes and splicing
Breeding combines natures and attributes, and Steam Deck HQ notes that it raises base stats for offspring. Genes for body parts, colours, eyes and abilities, plus mutated perks, let you craft a specimen that combines your discoveries. Steam Deck HQ adds an important trade off: splicing perks onto a Voidling prevents it from breeding.
Use unspliced creatures to raise base stats and combine good natures.
Hold back strong parents so you can keep improving the line.
Add perks and ability genes to the creature you actually take into missions.
7 Missions and staying on level
I Dream of Indie warns that going into missions under levelled brings penalties, so progress depends on keeping your main creatures up to the planet you are on. Faster clears earn stars, and the Master Wrangler achievement asks for 44 of them. Replaying earlier missions with a stronger team is a good way to collect missed stars, golden eggs and resources at the same time.
Search levels for eggs, including golden ones that count toward stars, and release surplus creatures. Try each species, then invest mutagens in two or three main Voidlings across different elements. Spend attribute points to match how each creature fights, and remember research upgrades a whole bloodline. Breed unspliced creatures to raise base stats, keep a breeding pair, and splice perks only onto the fighter you use. Stay on level for each planet, replay missions for stars, and lower the difficulty when needed.
