Mortal Shell II is an action RPG in the soulslike style from Cold Symmetry, published by Playstack. You play a being who possesses Shells, the bodies of eight lost warriors scattered through a ruined world, and each Shell brings its own abilities and story. The store describes combat with no stamina limit and a compact, tightly connected open world. This page covers the questions to settle before buying. For how to play, see the beginner guide, and for the eight Shells and all achievements, see the Shells guide.

1 Do you need the first game

No. The store calls it a standalone sequel that significantly expands on the original, with free exploration and extensive weapon upgrades. Fextralife points out that it has eight Shells, double the number in the first game. Knowing the first game helps with the atmosphere, but it is not required to follow the systems or the goals.

2 What kind of game is it

No stamina
Dodging and sprinting are free. A resource called Resolve powers Shell abilities, sidearms and Tarstones instead.
Break and riposte
Attacks and parries fill an enemy posture meter; when it breaks, a riposte deals heavy damage.
Shells as classes
Each Shell works like armor and a class, with its own abilities and upgrade tree.

The world is built around a hub, the Marrow Keep, and beacons that act as checkpoints and fast travel points. Steam Deck HQ describes a world full of trinkets, guarded chests and mini dungeons, and Analog Stick Gaming says exploration rarely feels wasted. Your long-term goal is to recover the Ova by cleansing corrupted beacons.

3 How long is it

Fextralife estimates 30 to 40 hours for a full playthrough with exploration for an average soulslike player, and Analog Stick Gaming finished in about 29 hours including side content. A focused run that skips optional dungeons will be shorter, but guides recommend exploring away from the objective to strengthen your toolkit before bosses.

4 Can you make it easier or harder

Yes, through two items that several guides describe the same way.

Easier: Slayer Seal
Found at the Marrow Keep. It restores health and Resolve on ripostes and lets sidearms deal break damage. Equipping it disables achievements.
Harder: Night Mode
Bring the Gloombound Flame to Thestus at the Marrow Keep. Enemies get much tougher but drop more Gloom, and some encounters and merchants change.

Build choices also shift the difficulty. Giant Bomb described the sequel as valuing flexibility and variety over sheer difficulty.

5 What reviewers said

OutletVerdict
Analog Stick Gaming9.5 out of 10. Wished for co-op
Fextralife8.4 out of 10. Better flow without stamina; limited enemy variety
Steam Deck HQ4.5 out of 5 for the game, 3 out of 5 for the Deck version

The praise is consistent: a sequel that learned from the first game, with more bosses, strong late-game fights and exploration worth doing. The complaints are also consistent: enemies with only one or two attacks repeat across areas, the camera can cause deaths in tight spaces, and Shells and weapons are hard to find without maps.

6 Is there co-op

No. The store lists it as single-player only, and Analog Stick Gaming named the lack of co-op as its main criticism. Other features listed include full controller support, adjustable text size, contrast controls, custom volume, subtitle options and Steam Cloud.

7 Content notice

The store lists a required age of 17. The developer notice mentions violence including sword fights with blood, execution moves and medieval firearms. This guide does not describe violent scenes in detail.

8 PC requirements and Steam Deck

PartMinimum (store)
OSWindows 10 or 11
CPUCore i7-10700K or Ryzen 5 3600
GPURTX 2060 SUPER 8 GB or RX 6600 8 GB
StorageSSD required

The store only lists minimum requirements and gives no memory or storage size, so check the store page again before buying. Reviewers on strong PCs reported smooth performance, though at least one review noted frame drops and crashes at launch. Fifteen languages are supported, with full audio in English only.

On Steam Deck
Steam Deck HQ found the default profile locked to a stable 30 fps at reduced settings, with the low global illumination setting making dungeons unusually bright. The launch option SteamDeck=0 unlocks the full graphics menu. Expect about three hours of battery at default settings.
Summary

Mortal Shell II is a standalone soulslike sequel at a list price of USD 49.99, so the first game is not required. It drops stamina in favor of Resolve, posture breaks and ripostes, and gives you eight Shells to possess. Expect roughly 30 to 40 hours. The Slayer Seal makes it easier but disables achievements, and Night Mode makes it harder. Reviewers scored it highly but noted repetitive enemies and no co-op. The store lists only minimum requirements, including an SSD.
