Öoo is an exploration puzzle platformer about a bomb caterpillar. The store calls it charming yet mysterious, and the whole game revolves around discovering creative ways to use bombs. It is developed by NamaTakahashi, tiny cactus studio and Tsuyomi, and published by NamaTakahashi. The Steam version came out on 7 August 2025. This page answers the questions people ask before buying. For the controls and how to think about the puzzles, see the beginner guide, and for abilities, secrets and achievements, see the bombs and secrets page.
1 What kind of game is it
A compact puzzle platformer built on one idea. Inverse describes the start: you are nothing more than a cute, round head that walks on its own, until you find a bomb that trails behind you and turns you into a short, explosive caterpillar. Nintendo World Report puts it even more simply: you cannot jump, and all you can do is move until you find that bomb. From there, every obstacle is solved by placing and detonating your own body segment.
2 Do you need to read anything
No. The store lists no text as a feature, so the game can be enjoyed without language barriers. Steam still shows an unusually long list of supported languages, which mostly matters for the store page and menus. Whatever language you speak, the puzzles are communicated entirely through what you see on screen.
3 How long is it
| Source | Length |
|---|---|
| Steam store | A dense experience of 2 to 3 hours |
| Inverse | Around two hours, with optional endgame secrets after that |
| Nintendo World Report | Possible in under two hours, depending on how fast you solve puzzles |
| Wayside Shakedown | Two to three hours; three for the reviewer |
It is short by design. Nintendo World Report listed only one downside, simply that it ends. If you want value per hour, this is a small game, but reviewers agree there is no filler in it.
4 How hard are the puzzles
They build gradually rather than spiking. Inverse explains that instead of introducing a technique and dropping it once you master it, the game keeps showing you a skill you already have and lets you work out how to combine it with everything else. Wayside Shakedown, whose reviewer admits puzzles are not their specialty, still finished in about three hours and describes eureka moments that sent them back to earlier sections using fast travel.
5 Where can you play it
On PC through Steam, which lists Windows only, with full controller support and Steam Cloud. Nintendo World Report reports that a Switch version was shadowdropped after the Japanese Indie World showcase in March 2026, with a release date of 3 March 2026. If you prefer handheld play, that version is an option.
6 What reviewers and players said
| Source | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Nintendo World Report | 9.5. Awesome puzzles, great pacing and flow, inventive simple mechanics |
| Inverse | Called it the best puzzle game of the year in its headline; concentrated joy without a dull moment |
| Wayside Shakedown | An explosively fun, bite-size journey |
| Steam users | Overwhelmingly Positive: 6,797 of 6,840 reviews positive; Japanese reviews 784 of 793 (15 September 2026) |
A positive rate above 99 percent across nearly seven thousand reviews is rare. Players and critics alike point to the same things: a single mechanic explored thoroughly, and a length that never outstays its welcome.
7 Price and requirements
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Price | USD 9.99 list price; the store lists one add-on |
| Minimum | Windows 10 or later, Intel i3 or better, 2 GB memory, Intel HD 4000 or better, DirectX 11 |
| Storage | 300 MB |
The requirements are about as light as PC games get, so almost any laptop from the last decade should run it. Steam shows 12 achievements.
Öoo is a wordless puzzle platformer where a caterpillar uses its own bomb segments to reach new places. It lasts roughly two to three hours, with optional secrets afterwards, and its puzzles grow by combining skills you already know. It costs USD 9.99, runs on almost any PC, and also reached Switch in March 2026. Critics scored it very highly and more than 99 percent of Steam reviews are positive.
