Age of History 2: Definitive Edition Mods & Editors

Definitive Edition provides built-in editors, save-local flag tools and Steam Workshop integration. A useful custom scenario keeps those scopes distinct: changing one running save, editing a scenario and loading a community mod are different operations. This guide explains the current tools and corrections without presenting any creation as a guaranteed compatible mod set.

Version scope: Definitive Edition with the released May tools, June rebellion rework and August rebellion balance change. Scenario and mod settings can alter an individual game; this guide does not treat original-edition rules as interchangeable.

1. Separate a scenario change from a running-save change

The store lists Scenario, Civilization, Flag, Wasteland, Map and Province editors, among other tools. Identify what you intend to change before entering an editor. A scenario defines a starting setup, while some later tools modify the current game. This distinction matters when you compare a clean campaign with one you altered mid-session. It is planning guidance rather than a promise that every editor operation automatically creates a recoverable copy or updates all existing saves.

2. Record which content takes priority

The official mod notice says the game loads mod files first, then subscribed Workshop items, then base-game files. A different result after adding content can therefore reflect which file takes precedence rather than a base-game rule changing. Keep a list of active content and test a new addition under a known scenario. The load order does not prove that several mods are mutually compatible. Avoid explaining every conflict through the original game before checking the content you actually enabled.

3. Use Workshop examples as separate content scopes

The developer spotlight includes expanded timelines, maps and scenarios created by the community. Their descriptions establish that such content exists, not that its civilizational list or rules are part of the default campaign. Check the item you selected and the scenario it provides. A guide for a community Earth map can differ from a base-map guide while both describe their own installations correctly. Do not merge all spotlighted numbers into a single official base-game content count.

4. Enable neutral-only assignment when that is the intended edit

The May update adds Assign Neutral Provinces Only. When enabled, the assignment menu ignores provinces already controlled by civilizations. Use it when your aim is filling neutral areas rather than changing established ownership, and confirm the result before making further edits. The option is a scope filter, not a substitute for checking the selected civilization and provinces. The same update adds an in-game world editor toggle and a separate assignment command for running-game changes.

5. Keep Flag Painter changes tied to the intended save

Flag Painter requires the game to have been saved at least once. Designs created there are used for that save and loaded with it. Open the tool through the flag or its diplomacy/decisions button, then check the intended save before editing. This is different from assuming that a custom flag globally replaces the civilization in every scenario. A save-local design can be correct in one campaign without appearing automatically in another new game.

6. Use the painting backup within its stated limit

The flag tools include Undo and one saved backup that can be restored through Load Backup. Treat that as an editing aid for the current design, not a version archive for every historical flag or a backup of the whole campaign. Decide what state you want to retain before replacing the single backup. The drawing tools, grid and color picker help construct a design, but their presence does not establish that every other scenario or save receives the finished flag.

7. Check event behavior against corrected triggers

Applied updates correct issues with event copying in the JSON saving system, long descriptions pushing decisions off-screen and specific triggers. If a custom event behaves differently after an update, identify the trigger, active content and the condition you expected. The April loan notice also fixes the Occupied Provinces trigger. These are documented corrections, not a complete validation of every event you create. A visible popup and a correctly satisfied condition should be checked as separate parts of the test.

8. Update before using an old mod-crash workaround

The May update fixes some mod-related returns to the main menu when adding civilizations or releasing vassals, and July addresses adding a civilization in the Scenario Editor with some mods. Check the installed version and the particular action before disabling unrelated content or assuming all mods are broken. The fixes target described cases; they do not certify every Workshop item or combination. Retain the intended scenario setup and compare one added item at a time when diagnosing a remaining problem.

Keep the original scenario identified and test one content change at a time. Confirm whether the tool edits a save, a scenario or the active content set.

Key points

Use editor scope filters, preserve the intended flag state and record content priority. Test custom events and current mod fixes without assuming that a spotlight or load order guarantees compatibility.
