Pathogenic FAQ: Demo, Co-op & Current Updates

Pathogenic is a cellular roguelike whose builds combine collected organelles and their interactions. Its current patches also change solo Diatom control, demo scope and how several bonuses stack. This FAQ separates those systems so an older build video or demo does not become an inaccurate full-game instruction.

Version scope: the released game and Patch 1.2.0, with the preceding balance and control corrections. This is a fictional cellular roguelike. Demo scope, mod compatibility, local cooperation and individual organelle effects are separate checks.

1. What is the central progression loop?

The store describes a fictional parasite moving through generated organ-themed areas, collecting organelles and changing its build. Plasmid fragments support permanent upgrades between runs, with a separate tree for each parasite. Distinguish the current run’s organelles from that persistent progression before deciding what an upgrade improves. The regular US base price is $9.99 at this check. The overview does not establish one strongest parasite or a universal unlock order for every tree.

2. Is the returned demo the whole current game?

The developer re-releases the demo after launch and explicitly describes it as a limited taster of the core loop. Before release, it had been updated more like an early-development sample; the new scope is intentionally different. Do not assume an old demo route exposes the same content as the released game or guarantees a save-transfer method. The announcement explains the sample’s purpose, not a promise that every full-game parasite, area or unlock is available within it.

3. Can I control Diatom without another player?

The post-launch update adds selecting one-player Diatom with the X button on the selection screen. One input device then controls both halves. It also describes switching to single-player control after fifteen seconds without input from the other device. Patch 1.2.0 corrects solo control loss after alt-tab or an editor click. This is a specific control feature, not a requirement that every parasite or every run must be played in cooperation.

4. Does co-op mean a native online lobby?

The current Steam listing documents shared or split-screen cooperation and Remote Play Together. Keep these features distinct from a native online lobby, which is not established by that listing. The Diatom update discusses the two input devices and how one player can control both halves. Decide which setup you intend to use and check its current controls. A platform streaming feature and the game’s local input handling answer different questions about how the session is shared.

5. Why does an old huge-damage build behave differently?

The balance update changes overcharge-strength bonuses from multiplicative stacking to additive stacking. It also removes double application of global bonuses from some effects, including Lateral Emitter and Peroxisome. Patch 1.2.0 later corrects ordering for sibling infusers on one-shot bolts. Read the correction that applies to the specific effect rather than expecting every historical damage result to persist. These changes do not establish a current universal damage ranking.

6. Can I skip the Secret Level puzzle immediately?

The post-launch update adds a difficulty option to skip the puzzle, but says it appears after the Secret Level boss has been defeated. Keep that condition intact when checking the menu. A missing option on an earlier save is not evidence that all settings are broken, and the feature should not be advertised as an unconditional opening shortcut. The guide does not provide an invented secret code or a substitute unlock route.

7. Will all mods and every old save load correctly?

The demo-return update warns that some mods can become incompatible and recommends comparing without them if a crash follows an update. Save recovery and later save/resume behavior are also corrected. Patch 1.2.0 stops cleared rooms re-arming wall spikes and fixes a heal-room max-health repeat. Those are separate conditions. A mod starting successfully is not proof that all its effects remain compatible, and a save correction is not a blanket guarantee that every damaged file is repaired.

8. What current display and controller changes matter?

The post-launch update adds camera zoom and improves mouse/controller switching. The balance patch adds a ninety-FPS limiter choice. Patch 1.2.0 fixes window sizing and several focus or Details-button conflicts, including the organelle editor cursor interfering with pause-menu focus. Match the symptom to the corrected input or display path. These notes describe fixes and options, not guaranteed performance for every computer, mod or crowded generated scene.

Key points

Build from current organelles and persistent plasmids, use the verified solo Diatom controls and check the current stacking rules. Treat demo, mod and Secret Level access as separate conditions.
