Shift At Midnight FAQ: Story, Endless & Co-op

The store description and later patches describe different stages of Shift At Midnight. This FAQ separates its original cooperative design, the expanded lobby limit and the existing Endless mode from a planned major update. It also keeps current patience and customer changes ahead of older patch advice.

Content notice: the game contains horror, blood and gore. This guide uses non-graphic descriptions. Scope: released customer, lobby and Endless changes through September 1; a planned major Endless update is separate from the existing mode.

1. What do I actually do during a shift?

The store combines serving customers with checking their identity, stocking products, handling deliveries and cleaning the gas station. Suspicious visitors create a separate investigation task using identity documents, computer information and behavior. Balance these fictional game responsibilities instead of treating a sale as proof that a visitor is safe. The overview does not provide a universal list of correct answers for all generated customers or an exact quota route.

2. How does Story differ from Endless?

The official release information describes thirteen randomly generated Story nights and says completing Story unlocks Endless. Later updates explicitly change customers and systems in the existing Endless mode. That establishes current mode access and its stated condition. The store also advertises a major Endless update as planned for the fourth quarter; this does not mean all Endless play is still unavailable or that every promised future addition is already included.

3. Is the player limit three or six?

The original description focuses on cooperation for up to three. The July 23 patch adds selecting a lobby maximum of six, while the developer says the game was designed for three and recommends against more than three for a first playthrough. Preserve both facts: the later setting expands capacity, but not a promise of equally balanced first-time play at every size. Confirm the lobby limit with the host rather than treating the old blurb as the final current setting.

4. Can Steam players join every other platform?

The official release post says Steam players play with other Steam players, while Xbox and Game Pass have their own crossplay pool. Do not combine those statements into unrestricted crossplay. Confirm which version every participant is using before blaming a connection failure on the host. A bundle with another horror game is a purchase grouping, not an added platform bridge, shared save or common multiplayer lobby.

5. Does Endless still remove customer patience?

The July balance patch removes patience in Endless, but the September 1 update explicitly adds it back. Use the later rule when reading current advice. A historical no-patience strategy can therefore be obsolete even though its source was official at the time. Check the selected mode and updated behavior rather than assuming every Story mechanic and every older Endless exception are interchangeable. The notes do not give one guaranteed timing for every customer.

6. Where do cameras and the changed reports apply?

The September update adds security cameras to Endless, viewed through the computer to watch the forest. It also changes the Endless end-of-day report by removing quota, personal-funds and pet fields, and disables emails in that mode. Those are mode-specific interface rules. A missing Endless email or report field is not automatically a broken Story objective. Keep the current mode visible when comparing an older screenshot or an instruction written for Story.

7. Are new customers and Steam cloud saves released?

The August update adds fifteen customers to both Story and Endless and adds Steam cloud saves, together with individual player volume sliders. September adds thirty more customers to both modes. These are released additions, but the numbers are additions at those dates rather than a verified total roster or guaranteed unique sequence in one session. Cloud-save support is not a promise that every conflict or corrupted local file can be repaired.

8. Should I still switch to the launch emergency beta?

The launch connection post describes a temporary beta-branch workaround for lobby problems. That historical instruction should not be presented as the universal current first step after subsequent public patches. Begin with compatible current versions, the platform pool and the host limit. Preserve relevant save information before changing branches. The current regular US base price is $9.99; past sale and bundle announcements do not establish the present regional checkout price.

Check mode, platform pool and patch date together. A launch workaround or an earlier Endless exception is not automatically current advice.

Key points

Complete the stated Story condition for Endless, use the expanded lobby capacity with its design caveat and check platform compatibility. Follow the later patience, customer and interface changes rather than outdated patch instructions.
