Beginner Strategy Guide
A focused starter path through Project Makeover: how to read level goals, how to save boosters, and how to pace your stars across the makeover stories.

1What kind of game is Project Makeover?

A match-3 puzzle game by Magic Tavern with a reality-show framing. You solve match-3 levels to earn stars; stars fund hair, makeup, outfit, and room transformations for each client. The match-3 is the gameplay; the makeover stories are the reward.

2Always read the goal before you tap

Every level has a specific goal: clear a color, fill jars, drop items, free trapped pieces. The biggest beginner habit fix is to read the goal panel before making a single move. Most failed levels are players matching toward cascades when the level needed specific board work.

3Plan three moves ahead

Match-3 rewards chained planning. Look at the move you are about to make and ask what it sets up for the next two. A move that clears four pieces but ruins the next move is worse than a small match that sets up a big follow-up.

4Hold boosters for real stuck points

Boosters look fun and powerful, but they are wasted on levels you would clear in two or three more attempts. Save them for the level that has eaten ten lives and still resists. The free pass rate is already high; boosters exist to break bottlenecks, not to make easy wins easier.

5Treat the five-life cap as the day pacing

The game does not want you to play for hours; it wants you to come back. Use all five lives in a session, then walk away while the timer refills. Spending gems or real money to refill lives compounds into a habit fast and is the main long-term cost.

6Pace stars across stories instead of one

Multiple clients are usually available. Spreading stars keeps several stories progressing and gives you variety. Dumping all stars on one client just to finish their look is the fastest way to feel burned out.

7Common beginner mistakes

Common mistakes
  • Matching without reading the goal panel.
  • Single-move thinking instead of planning ahead.
  • Burning boosters on levels you would clear anyway.
  • Paying gems or money to refill lives.
  • Dumping all stars on one client at once.
Best practices
  • Read the goal first; plan three moves ahead.
  • Save boosters for genuine stuck points.
  • Use the daily life cap as your pacing.
  • Spread stars across multiple clients.
  • Walk away during the life refill timer.
