I Am Legion Beginner Guide

Start by identifying your mode and reading one coherent build path. Learn how hero scaling, Stand synthesis and the current difficulty tools fit together before spending resources on a large roster.

Current reference: Checked 26 October 2026 against the Steam store, version 2.0 announcements and the first-anniversary update. Advice below distinguishes documented mechanics from suggested planning habits.

1. Identify the mode before following an old guide

Classic Mode and Artifact Mode coexist in the developer update notes. Before copying a crafting plan, look at the mode selected in your game. Version 2.0 added Artifact Mode with forging choices, Purple Artifact combos, synthesis trees and Devour. Classic Mode also received its own changes, including an equipment enhancement cap of two in the version 2.0 notes. A rule from one mode should not silently become a rule for both.

Use the pause screen to check the current stage difficulty; the anniversary update explicitly added that display. This gives a useful reference when comparing attempts. If the mode or difficulty changed, a slower clear does not by itself show that a replacement Stand is weaker. Recording the hero, mode and stage gives the next attempt a clearer purpose.

2. Choose a scaling direction, then inspect the hero

The store gives strength-oriented heroes with defensive or attribute-supporting Stands and magic-oriented heroes supporting spellcasters as examples of different builds. This is a starting point for reading bonuses, not a fixed rule that every hero supports only one damage category. The anniversary character Monk - Xuanji is explicitly described as a physical and magic hybrid.

Read the actual hero skill and combo conditions before selecting additions. Swordsman and Moon Goddess both received skill and combo changes after version 2.0. Their anniversary notes added effects to relevant Stand attack skills and changed later combo requirements. An old numeric screenshot can therefore be wrong even when its character name still matches. Plan around the conditions displayed by the installed game.

3. Use the roster as a plan, not a fixed ratio

Up to eight Stands can fight alongside the hero. Copies of the same Stand support star-level upgrades, while combinations of different Stands lead to higher-tier summons. Those are different decisions: one develops an existing unit, the other follows a recipe toward another unit. Before consuming materials, check the target and whether those materials also serve another planned synthesis.

There is no official universal rule requiring six damage Stands and two defensive Stands. Instead, use the available slots to meet the chosen hero and combo requirements, then observe what the attempt lacks. If you are dying before a planned combination comes together, inspect defensive effects and the time needed to assemble it. If boss damage is the problem, inspect the bonuses actually reaching the attacks you use. These are diagnostic suggestions, not tested optimal lineups.

4. Track the awakening objective during battle

The current store identifies Special Bosses as a source of Awakening Scrolls for Purple Stands. The version 2.0 release notes describe Orange forms and quests completed during battle as part of awakening. Treat the scroll and the displayed objective as things to check together. Do not assume that merely owning any scroll automatically completes every requirement for a chosen summon.

The anniversary update added an Awakening Scroll display to the Stand Recruitment interface. Look there when planning which path is realistic during the current attempt. The official descriptions used here do not establish that an awakened combat unit survives every run reset. This guide therefore does not recommend sacrificing the rest of a run on the assumption that awakening is a permanent account upgrade.

5. Budget resources in Artifact Mode

A forge presents three Artifact choices, and Ore can refresh them. A practical first step is to inspect those choices against a synthesis tree before paying for another selection. The tree and synergy icons are intended to expose relationships between pieces. A larger isolated stat is only one part of that decision; a piece may also complete an intended Purple Artifact combination.

Devour is a separate Gold expense that activates crafted Purple Artifact effects without an equipment slot, subject to a cap that grows with character level. The anniversary inventory increase to 30 slots provides more room, but it does not remove resource or Devour-cap limits. Compare the cost shown by the game before selling, refreshing or consuming gear. Proportional Ore refunds do not prove that repeated experimentation has zero cost.

6. Use the available help deliberately

Adversity Boost is disabled by default. If a stage is blocking progress and you want assistance, inspect that setting: the anniversary notes say accumulated time from failed attempts grants extra Boss Damage on the current stage when it is active. Keep track of whether it is enabled when comparing runs, since a bonus from the setting can otherwise look like a change caused solely by a new build.

The permanent 2x speed unlock requires ten game clears in the anniversary announcement. Until that condition is met, treat speed access as a separate progression issue. Gauntlet Relay is another distinct objective within Artifact Mode, taking the player through three consecutive maps. Learn ordinary mode and crafting rules before using a multi-map boss challenge as the sole measure of a first build.

7. Review one attempt with a short checklist

After an attempt, compare the hero conditions you intended to satisfy with the ones actually activated. Next check whether materials went toward the chosen synthesis target, whether awakening requirements appeared, and how much Ore or Gold was spent. Change a specific part of the plan for the next attempt. This approach makes the result easier to interpret than simultaneously replacing the hero, mode and entire squad.

The developers added boss-kill and challenge-monster statistics to Artifact Mode in the anniversary update. These counters give another piece of feedback alongside a simple clear or defeat. They do not by themselves identify the strongest Stand, but they can help compare similar attempts.
