Late joins, single-use revival terminals, changing lever counts and mixed VR sessions.
Choose the session before dividing the work
Online co-op supports up to four people; local split screen supports up to two. The store also lists Remote Play Together. Agree on the mode and selected difficulty before starting. There is no official rule requiring a four-player group to split into pairs, and no evidence that split screen makes monsters or tasks automatically safer. Staying together or separating is a group decision based on the current objective and route. The useful first step is making sure everyone understands the same recovery rules.
Joining an ordinary game after it starts
Update 1.2 added seamless joining both in the lobby and during gameplay. Its announcement says arrivals spawn at the last used save terminal and that the host gains an additional pause-menu interface. In 1.2.1 the join menu gained the current player count, and 1.2.2 added a lobby indicator. Update 1.3 also displays difficulty in session selection. Use those visible details to identify the intended session instead of assuming every entry is still waiting in a lobby.
Nightmare changes the arrival rule
A mid-game arrival in Nightmare remains a spectator until a current player uses a terminal. Each terminal can revive players only once, there are no save points, and a total team death restarts the game from the beginning. That makes a late join a coordination issue rather than an immediate extra active teammate. Tell the surviving players when someone joins and establish whether a terminal can still be used. The official announcement does not promise unlimited recovery or a separate reward for finishing this mode.
Expect the Laboratory to respond to team size
Patch 1.2.1 changed the Laboratory lever count dynamically during play; previously it was set when leaving the lobby. If players join after departure, do not keep following a lever count remembered from the start. Recheck the current task and communicate any change to the group. This patch establishes that the count responds during the session, but it does not state a universal formula such as one lever per player. Avoid turning the change into an invented numerical puzzle solution.
Hand over items and use voice deliberately
Since 1.2, players can take items directly from another player holding them. Let the recipient know what you are handing over so an important object is not moved without agreement. The same update slightly increased voice-chat hearing range, while 1.1 increased the maximum voice volume and improved lobby and dead-player voice quality. None of those notes says voice reaches the entire map. As practical advice, give a short location, task and equipment update before separating, and confirm that the other player can hear it.
Read terminal and spectator problems precisely
Outside Nightmare, the 1.2 joining announcement ties arrival to the last used save terminal. The 1.1 notes also prevent saving immediately after a death because of a restoration problem in the earlier behavior. Nightmare adds single-use revival terminals and spectator waiting. These are different conditions, so report the mode and what the terminal actually does when troubleshooting. Patch 1.3.3 specifically fixed spectator mode not working for clients. Check the installed build before treating that old symptom as an intended rule.
Mixing VR and monitor players
Major Update 1.1 explicitly supports multiplayer with VR and flat-screen players together. It slightly reduces difficulty only if every player in the session is in VR. A mixed group should not expect that same stated condition to apply. The published PC requirements concern monitor play; the store warns that VR needs higher specifications. Before a long session, establish that each participant can see interaction prompts and use their own controls. That is a preparation suggestion, not an official performance guarantee or a requirement to use the former VR testing branch.
