Star Trek: Voyager Across the Unknown Beginner Guide
Start a Campaign, read room and resource previews, form away teams and understand the saves before your first long journey.
1. Choose Campaign for a first story journey
The main menu now calls the story option New Campaign, following Patch 2.1. Campaign is the mode built around the Voyager narrative, ship reconstruction and away missions. Q Trials is a separate faster mode with procedural sectors and permanent unlocks. Starting with Campaign is a suggested learning route if you want story context for the crew and ship systems.
Choose a standard difficulty or inspect the custom option before committing. Custom settings include resource deposits, storage, enemy power, dialogue checks, construction time, research time, treatment time, homesickness and sector-time pressure. Challenge Mode disables manual saving. Select pressure settings that let you learn the interface; changing a research duration is a different choice from removing a morale-related threat.
2. Read the damaged ship as a set of current needs
The ship begins damaged. The official overview identifies restoring rooms, securing life support and energy, and constructing systems, quarters, industry and research facilities as the management tasks. Look at the resource and energy previews before assigning another room or upgrade, then compare the displayed effect with the need you are trying to solve.
Patch 2.1 fixes the next-cycle preview when rooms are switched on or off and makes Warp Core Efficiency research update the cycle counter immediately. Those are useful checks when a number changes after an assignment. The patch also says point-of-interest shuttle requirements count only shuttles in an active bay, so owning a shuttle is not the whole availability test.
3. Scan, read potential finds and choose the team for the event
Exploration locates resources and points of interest. Patch 2.1 adds previews for items, crew and resources that may be found at points of interest and clarifies options with only one outcome. Read both the possible result and the required crew or equipment before selecting an approach. A preview describes a possibility; the option details tell you what you are actually committing to.
Campaign away missions use teams selected for individual talents. Match complementary skills to the mission rather than assuming a fixed best group for every situation. The official premise warns that iconic crew may die as events diverge. Keep an eye on availability, injuries and the people required by the mission before sending a team, while following the conditions shown for the particular encounter.
4. Connect research spending with the ship economy
Research can add technologies and improved layouts. In Patch 2.1, Warp Core Efficiency technologies also require Dilithium, while hull technologies also require Duranium. Read the full current cost before starting an upgrade; having science progress does not remove its material requirements. The patch also changes production and trading, making an older launch-era cost guide a poor substitute for the live panel.
The Waste Disassembler and Bussard Collector receive higher outputs, and Trade Protocols moves to a 20 percent bonus. When planning the next room, compare expected production, cargo capacity and the resources your chosen technology consumes. This is a practical planning method, not a published universal research order. A ship with a particular shortage may need a different next investment from another run.
5. Use Campaign saves and learn the Delta Flyer timing
In ordinary Campaign play, manual saving is restricted to safe areas, and the load menu separates manual and automatic slots. Watch the time-since-last-save display before leaving a long session. If you enabled Challenge Mode, manual saving is disabled. Q Trials has another policy entirely, so a guide describing its event autosaves should not be used to infer Campaign save availability.
Later, Update 1.7 introduces the Delta Flyer quest with Tom Paris in sector 7. Construction requires a level-3 Shuttlebay, with one Delta Flyer allowed. It can support combat without splitting rewards and opens particular event branches. Patch 2.1 adds options in Juggernaut, Child's Play and One Small Step. Keep this as a later ship-development objective rather than expecting it during the opening damaged-ship tutorial.
