1 Decide what your build is for
The game contains two very different challenges, and the best equipment for one is not the best for the other.
| Challenge | What the build needs |
|---|---|
| Screen filling hordes | Wide coverage and effects that spread. Single target damage is mostly wasted |
| Colossal mutant lords | Concentrated damage and survivability through a long fight |
| Void Spire floors | Both, plus the ability to keep working as enemy power scales without limit |
A build that does everything adequately clears less than one that does its intended job well. Because builds can be saved permanently for the Spire, it is worth eventually keeping more than one.
2 When to recast and when to keep looting
Recasting exists because the store expects you to be unhappy with the stats on your drops. It is a fix for a piece that is otherwise right, not a way to turn a poor piece into a good one.
3 Set bonuses change the maths
Legend Contracts drop in battle and grant unique set bonuses that are described as dramatically shifting build potential. In practice this means a piece with worse individual stats can be the correct choice.
This is the single most common way players in gear driven games make themselves weaker while believing they are improving.
4 Spirits, blessings and active skills
Three in run layers stack on top of your equipment: summoned legendary historical spirits for buffs, passive blessings, and active skills. The store describes them as freely combinable, which is an invitation to specialise rather than to spread out.
| Layer | How to choose |
|---|---|
| Spirit summons | Pick the buff that fixes your current weakness, not the one with the biggest number |
| Passive blessings | Stack the same theme. Two that multiply beat four that do unrelated things |
| Active skills | Keep at least one that creates space. A pure damage loadout has no answer to being surrounded |
5 Spending Contribution Points well
Contribution Points are retained whether you succeed or fail, and they feed both stat upgrades and new abilities in the talent tree. Because they are guaranteed income, the efficient play early is volume rather than caution.
6 The Void Spire loop
The Spire is described plainly: enemy power increases infinitely across rising floors, every floor brings better loot and unlimited upgrades, and builds made in standard maps can be saved and brought in.
Because the scaling has no ceiling, there is no version of the Spire you finish. The correct mindset is that a floor you cannot pass is your current stopping point, not a failure, and the loot from the floors below it is the reward.
7 Mistakes that waste the most time
| Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|
| Playing cautiously to preserve a run | Contribution Points are kept on failure. Push and restart instead |
| Equipping every stat upgrade | Check which set bonus it breaks first |
| Recasting ordinary items | Reserve it for legendaries and set pieces |
| Mixing three elements | Commit to one and take the pieces that multiply it |
| Retrying a boss over and over | Farm gear instead. The store says outright that gear turns bosses into dummies |
Build for a specific challenge rather than for general strength, since hordes and mutant lords want different things. Recast only legendaries and set pieces, and always check which set bonus an upgrade breaks before equipping it. Stack one element and one blessing theme, keep an active skill that creates space, and spend early Contribution Points on survivability because longer runs produce more loot. Treat the Void Spire as a proving ground for builds that already work, and remember that failure costs nothing here, so pushing beats playing safe.
