Gears of War: Reloaded is a remaster of the original Gears of War, the third-person cover shooter that started the series. It is developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios, and it brought the first game to Steam and the series to PlayStation for the first time. The story follows Marcus Fenix, freed from prison by his friend Dominic Santiago fourteen years after a subterranean enemy called the Locust devastated the planet. This page answers the questions buyers ask most. For the campaign, see the campaign guide, and for multiplayer and achievements, see the Versus guide.
1 What exactly is Reloaded
It is the first game only, not a collection. According to the store, it includes all post-launch content for the original: a bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps, and characters and cosmetics, at no extra cost. Reviewers describe it as built on the 2015 Ultimate Edition with updated assets, lighting, shadows and reflections.
2 Is there split-screen on PC
No. The official Xbox Wire launch post states that split-screen campaign co-op is not available on PC or handhelds. Console versions support two-player split-screen. On PC you can still play the whole campaign with a friend online.
3 Do you need a Microsoft account
The game prompts you to sign in after the first launch. What the account is needed for is spelled out officially.
| Feature | Microsoft account |
|---|---|
| Cross progression | Required. Campaign saves and multiplayer progress follow your account |
| Cross-platform parties | All party members must be signed in |
| Cross-play itself | On by default; can be turned off in account settings |
Impulse Gamer, reviewing on PC, described linking an Xbox account as optional for simply playing. Some players at launch reported sign-in trouble, so if you only want the solo campaign offline, check the latest Steam discussions first.
4 Controls and PC features
Newcomers can pick a modern, streamlined control layout, while veterans can keep the classic scheme. The store lists mouse and keyboard support, controller remapping, ultrawide support, a benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, FSR 3.1 and DLSS 3.5 upscaling, HDR and Dolby Vision, and 7.1 surround sound. Accessibility entries include captions, chat speech-to-text and text-to-speech, color alternatives, narrated menus and adjustable difficulty.
5 How it runs
6 What reviewers said
| Outlet | Verdict |
|---|---|
| TheXboxHub | 4.5 out of 5. Crisper visuals, good netcode |
| Impulse Gamer (PC) | 4.5 out of 5. Excellent, but AI teammates can cause deaths |
| Windows Central | 4 out of 5 |
The shared view is that this is a faithful, great-looking version of a classic, best enjoyed by players who never played it. The criticism centers on what it does not change: difficulty mostly makes enemies tougher and you more fragile, AI partners can be unreliable, and the missing PC split-screen still stings.
7 Content notice
The store lists a required age of 17. The developer notice says violence and gore are present throughout combat between humans and the Locust, with both melee and ranged weapons. This guide does not describe violent scenes in detail.

Gears of War: Reloaded remasters the first Gears of War with all its post-launch content, at a list price of USD 39.99. It adds cross-play and cross progression, the latter tied to a Microsoft account. PC has no split-screen, which drew criticism at launch, but online co-op works. Reviewers scored it 4 to 4.5 out of 5, praising the visuals and smooth performance while noting that it changes little beyond presentation. It needs 70 GB and DirectX 12.
