Versus is the online multiplayer side of Gears of War: Reloaded. It supports up to eight players and cross-play across Xbox, PlayStation and Steam, with a Microsoft account needed for cross-platform parties. About a third of the achievements live here, and some are long grinds. Map and mode information below comes from launch coverage and reviews, so check the in-game playlists for the current rotation. Campaign achievements are explained in the campaign guide.
1 How Versus is set up
Cross-play is on by default. If you prefer to match only with other PC players, it can be turned off in account settings, at the cost of longer searches.
2 The modes
| Mode | How it plays |
|---|---|
| Team Deathmatch | Kill members of the other team to score. The easiest place to start |
| King of the Hill | Capture and hold a ring on the map |
| Execution | Downed enemies must be finished with an execution to count |
| 2v2 Gnasher | Shotgun-only duels between pairs, offered in ranked play |
| Assassination | Mentioned by TheXboxHub among the returning modes |
The achievement list also refers to ring-based game types in general and to a type called Boxes, and Mix It Up asks you to win a match in every Versus game type. Treat the in-game list as the authority on what is currently offered.
3 The 19 maps
Impulse Gamer and a separate map list both count 19 maps, drawn from the original game and its post-launch content: Bullet Marsh, Canals, Clocktower, Courtyard, Escalation, Fuel Depot, Garden, Gold Rush, Gridlock, Mansion, Mausoleum, Old Bones, Process, Raven Down, Rooftops, Sanctuary, Subway, Tyro Station and War Machine. Around the World asks you to win a match on every one, so expect to rotate through playlists rather than stick to one mode.
4 Surviving your first matches
Veterans of this game are fast. Learn the maps before ranked play.
Reviving and spotting both count toward achievements, and a lone player is an easy target.
The shotgun is the heart of close fights, and a whole ranked mode is built on it.
5 Achievement overview
| Group | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Story chapters | 21 | Unlock naturally on any difficulty |
| Difficulty | 4 | Casual, Normal, Hardcore, Insane |
| Co-op | 4 | Includes RAAM on Insane without going down |
| COG tags | 3 | 11, 22 and 33 tags |
| Campaign extras | 5 | Tutorial, two active reload, Whack-A-Grub, reading a comic |
| Versus and general | 19 | Levels, wins, revives and long grinds |
6 The Versus achievements
Two need consistent wins against real opponents: Can't Touch Me asks for 10 matches won without losing a round, and Nub Pwner for 20 rounds in ring-based types online won by shutting out the other team.
7 The grinds, and how to pace them
Let the long counters run in the background. Play ring-based modes when you want wins toward the ring achievements, stay close to teammates so revives and spotted kills add up, and switch maps and modes regularly to cover Around the World and Mix It Up. Handyman rewards picking up whatever weapon is on the map instead of always using the same one.
Versus supports up to eight players with cross-play, split into social and ranked playlists, across 19 maps. Modes include Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Execution and ranked 2v2 Gnasher. Of the 56 achievements, 37 come from the campaign and 19 from Versus and general play. The quick ones arrive in a few matches, but level 100, 10,000 kills and 100 ring matches are long grinds that depend on active playlists.
