The campaign of Gears of War: Reloaded follows Delta Squad through five acts. The chapter counts on this page come from the official achievement list, which labels story achievements by act and chapter, and the COG tag counts come from GameRant, cross-checked against the three collectible achievements. Buying questions, split-screen and the Microsoft account are covered on the FAQ page, and multiplayer on the Versus page.

1 The five acts

ActChaptersTags
I Ashes812
II Nightfall86
III Belly of the Beast66
IV The Long Road Home63
V Desperation86

Act I takes you from the escape from the Slab prison to recruiting Cole and Baird. Act II moves into the night, where the Kryll make darkness itself dangerous. Act III goes underground through the Imulsion factory and the mines. Act IV runs through the Conservatory to Adam's secret lab, ending in an escape from a giant Brumak, and Act V builds to the train carrying the Lightmass Bomb and the fight with General RAAM.

2 Choosing a difficulty

The achievement list names four levels, with one achievement for completing all acts on each.

Casual
Mercenary. For story first players and co-op with a newcomer.
Normal
Classic Mercenary. The standard first run for most shooter players.
Hardcore
Soldier. Enemies absorb more fire and you go down faster.
Insane
Commando. Best tackled after learning every encounter.

Impulse Gamer describes the higher settings as simply increasing how much punishment enemies can take and reducing how much you can take, rather than changing enemy behavior. That makes positioning and cover discipline, not new tactics, the skill that carries you through Hardcore and Insane.

3 Cover, reloads and staying up

Gears is built around moving from cover to cover. The tutorial path, rewarded by Prison Breakout, teaches the basics, and you can choose between modern and classic control layouts. Two habits make the biggest difference.

1
Learn the active reload
Pressing reload again at the right point on the reload bar speeds it up; the Zen achievements ask for 25 perfect ones, and 5 in a row.
2
Do not rely on AI partners
Impulse Gamer saw teammates cause avoidable deaths. Clear threats yourself rather than waiting for help.
3
Treat down but not out as a warning
Being downed gives your partner a chance to revive you, but on high difficulty it usually means your position was wrong.

4 Moments that trip people up

Several set pieces are not normal firefights. The official story achievements point to each one.

WhereWhat happens
Act I, chapter 8Kill the Berserker in the Tomb of the Unknown. TheXboxHub recalls luring her to break doors
Act II, chapter 4Use a spotlight as protection from the Kryll
Act II, chapter 6Get the Junker vehicle at Chap's gas station
Act III, chapters 5 and 6Kill the Corpser, then deploy the Sonic Resonator
Act IV, chapters 2 and 6Another Berserker in the Conservatory; escape from the Brumak
Act V, chapters 5 to 8Kill the Brumak, board the train with the Lightmass Bomb, defeat General RAAM

A useful rule for the Berserker fights: she hunts by sound and cannot be taken down by normal gunfire alone, so look at the arena for the tool the fight is built around. For the Kryll, stay in the light rather than trying to outrun them.

5 Playing in co-op

The campaign supports two players, with one as Marcus and one as Dom. On PC this is online only; split-screen is a console feature. Cross-play lets a PC player team up with Xbox or PlayStation players when both are signed in to a Microsoft account. Four achievements need co-op.

AchievementCondition
Dom-curiousComplete 1 chapter in co-op
DominationComplete 10 different chapters in co-op
I Can't Quit You DomComplete all acts in co-op
Brothers To The EndDefeat General RAAM in co-op on Insane without either player being downed

6 All 33 COG tags by chapter

COG tags are the dog tags of fallen soldiers. They sit in the same spots as in earlier versions of the game, and a red Crimson Omen symbol spray-painted nearby is the visual hint that one is close. The achievements unlock at 11 (Time to Remember), 22 (Honor-Bound) and all 33 (For the Fallen).

Missed one? Use chapter select
Tag guides note that you can load the chapter you missed and play just long enough to pick it up. Act I holds more than a third of all tags, so a careful first act gets you to Time to Remember almost immediately.

7 A route through the campaign

1
First run on Normal, ideally in co-op
Follow Crimson Omen symbols for tags and practice active reloads.
2
Clean up with chapter select
Grab missed tags and one-off achievements such as Whack-A-Grub.
3
Hardcore, then Insane
Save the RAAM co-op challenge for last, with a partner you trust.
Summary

The campaign spans five acts and 36 chapters, from the Slab prison to General RAAM. Four difficulties from Casual to Insane mainly change damage taken and dealt, so cover discipline matters most. Learn active reloads and do not count on AI partners. Co-op is online on PC and unlocks four achievements. All 33 COG tags sit near Crimson Omen symbols, with 12 in Act I, and chapter select lets you pick up any you missed.
