The Incident at Galley House is a detective game of deduction. According to the store, on Sunday 7 March 1936 a group of locals walked up to Galley House, a building they believed had stood empty for decades, and found the bloody aftermath of something horrific inside. Nobody ever worked out what happened. Many years later, you gain access to a peculiar machine that lets you listen in on echoes of the past. The game is published by Evil Trout Inc. and developed with William Rous. This page answers common questions without spoiling the mystery. For how the machine works, see the beginner guide, and for achievements and hints, see the achievements page.
1 What do you actually do
You watch and listen to scenes from that night and work out who was where, when, and what happened to them. Game Informer describes a researcher visiting the condemned house and using a machine that reconstructs scenes from the past, so you can piece together the conversations, actions and whereabouts of each person during the final hours. Scenes are located by entering numerical codes that indicate the location, the time and the people involved.
2 How it relates to Type Help and The Roottrees are Dead
The store explains that the game is based on Type Help, an acclaimed text-based browser game by William Rous, remastered for Steam by the creators of The Roottrees are Dead. Game Informer calls it a reimagined take on the 2025 horror text game. If you have played Type Help, the mystery will be familiar, but the store lists several enhancements.
| New in this version | What it means |
|---|---|
| Illustrated visual novel presentation | Scenes are shown with art rather than text alone |
| Full professional voice acting | Adventure Game Hotspot found each character had a distinct voice |
| 3D interface for navigating memories | You operate knobs and switches with the mouse to enter sequences |
| Original soundtrack, new content and puzzles | Even Type Help players have new material to solve |
Game Informer notes the notepad from The Roottrees are Dead returns. If you enjoyed its style of matching people, places and facts, the core loop of this game will feel familiar from the first scene.
3 How dark does it get
4 How long is it
Adventure Game Hotspot took about seven hours to finish and rates it as medium length, five to ten hours. Your time will vary with how quickly deductions come to you and how much you rely on hints. The store lists it as playable at your own pace without timed input, so there is no pressure to hurry.
5 What if you get stuck
Help is built in. Adventure Game Hotspot praises a very well-designed progressive hint system you can use whenever you need, without penalty. The achievement list even includes TYPE HE-L-P, awarded for asking the machine for help, a nod to the original title. Using hints is part of the intended experience rather than a failure.
