The Incident at Galley House gives you a strange machine and very little explanation, which is part of its atmosphere. This guide explains the rules of that machine as Game Informer and Adventure Game Hotspot describe them, and uses the official achievement list to confirm events you will run into, such as power failures. It never names the people involved or explains what happened to them. Buying questions are on the FAQ page.

1 The setup

You play a researcher visiting Galley House, where several bodies were found decades earlier and the causes were never explained (Game Informer). Adventure Game Hotspot opens with a newspaper from 1936 lying on the porch, and places the present day in 2011. Inside is the machine. Adventure Game Hotspot explains that it picks up audio echoes from the past when death is imminent, and that you operate it by turning knobs and flipping switches with the mouse to enter a sequence.

2 How scenes are found

Game Informer explains that scenes are located with numerical codes that indicate a location, a time and the people present, on a timeline of 26 segments. Your job is to deduce the right combination.

1
Pick a place
Choose a room. Achievements reward unlocking every location and watching a scene in every room, so rooms open up over time.
2
Pick a moment
Set a point on the 26-segment timeline.
3
Pick the people
Enter who you believe was there. People are numbers until you learn their names.
4
Watch and listen
A correct code plays the scene. Your first one unlocks the Seance achievement.
Scenes need someone close to death
Adventure Game Hotspot says the machine picks up echoes when death is imminent, and the achievement Still Alive exists for trying to view a scene that contains only living people. Use that rule to narrow your guesses: a moment where nobody is in danger is unlikely to give you anything.

3 Keeping notes

Game Informer reports that the notepad from The Roottrees are Dead returns for in-game notes, along with a search tool and timeline markers. The achievement Death Note is awarded for marking a death on the timeline, which confirms you can annotate the timeline directly.

ToolA good use
NotepadRecord what each numbered person says and does, scene by scene
SearchFind every mention of a name or object across scenes
Timeline markersMark deaths and key moments so gaps in the night stand out

4 Working out who is who

Game Informer says each person is identified only by a number until you discover their name. Adventure Game Hotspot adds an important warning: the game never confirms whether the names and avatars you assign are correct. That means a wrong guess can quietly mislead you later.

Write down why, not just who
Because assignments are not confirmed, note the evidence behind each name, such as a line of dialogue or where the person was. When something stops making sense, you can see which assumption to revisit.

5 When the power fails

Three achievements, Machine Supervisor, Researcher and Technical Engineer, are awarded for restoring the power when something goes wrong, the first, second and third time. So the machine will lose power during your investigation, more than once. The list does not say what causes it, and this guide does not speculate. When it happens, look for a way to restore power before assuming the game is stuck.

6 Wrong codes and dead ends

Wrong codes are normal. The achievement Persistence is awarded for trying the same incorrect code twice, which is a gentle joke about something every player does. To avoid it outside of achievement hunting, keep a short list of combinations you have already tried.

Good habits
Work one person or one room at a time, log tried codes, and mark deaths on the timeline as soon as you learn them.
Common mistakes
Guessing random combinations, and trusting a name you assigned early without evidence.

7 Using hints well

Adventure Game Hotspot describes a progressive hint system you can use at any time without penalty, and asking the machine for help unlocks TYPE HE-L-P. Progressive means hints start vague and get more specific, so take one step at a time and stop as soon as you see the way forward. That keeps the satisfaction of solving while avoiding hours of frustration.

Summary

You enter codes for a place, a moment on a 26-segment timeline and the people present, using knobs and switches, and a correct code plays a scene where death is near. Keep notes, use search and timeline markers, and record the evidence behind every name, because the game does not confirm identities. Expect the power to fail more than once and restore it. Log wrong codes, and use the penalty-free progressive hints one step at a time.
